Icon13 This annoys me more than most things today!!!!!!

Why do people text to ask if they can call when they can just call!?!?!?!

If I answer, I can take a call.

If not, I’LL TEXT BACK!!!!!!

Does this bother you all too!?!!!

What say you all!?!?!?!!

I hate to talk on the telephone and I always have.

That's why I like texting so much.

There are exceptions, but they are rare.

I’m on the phone all the time. A couple hundred calls a week average.

I hate phone calls.

If someone asks if they can call I normally say no and ask to tell me what’s up through text.

I think people text first in order to see if you have the TIME to talk on the phone.

People screen calls, are busy, don’t have time to talk if they do pick up.

The texting is just to make an appointment to talk, sort of.

It’s sort of like as a kid you were supposed to knock before entering your parent bedroom.

Hope this helps, Wookie.

This. It just takes a moment to reply to a text saying yes or no. An unexpected phone call, if you answer, invariably involves a conversation. Instead of a brief text response, a realtime conversation can distract you from what you were doing which could be very disruptive if you lose track of where you were in a series of sequential tasks. I absolutely hate it when I'm in the middle of working on my airplane wearing latex gloves that are dirty and greasy and the damn cellphone rings (it's usually spam). With a text, conversation is asynchronous; you can reply at your convenience.

I think a pretext for a phone call is appropriate. For instance, you're in the middle of getting a brazillian wax and the phone rings. Would it not be rude for the 'waxie' to answer the phone and have a conversation while the 'waxer' is conducting business? Just seems rude, but that's just my opinion.

I usually call ahead to see if it's a good time to text about taking a call.

Funny. I’m the exact opposite. I don’t want to do homework (write a novel on a tiny keyboard). CALL ME.

Talking on the phone is the great time waster, you know like meetings, so much irrelevant dialogue.

I'd settle for Tradies actually replying to my text/phone call/smoke signals.

We are on a road trip, and my husband was literally just complaining about this. It’s particularly challenging when you’re driving. Just call and, if they answer, always ask, “Did I catch you at a bad time?”

You nailed it Boopie!

That’s my point. We’re all Pavlovian dogs. Whether a ring or a ping it’s a distraction requiring my time and attention away from Rolexeses or reconciling my wife’s AMEX bill.

Just pick one. If I answer, I can talk. Don’t text me to ask if you can call!!!!!!!!!! Nonsense!!!!!!!

Who’s for more sensible intelligent social norms!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!???????????????????!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!

I got a flip phone. It’s a good excuse to dump texting. People know I’m too dumb to do number texting so they stopped texting altogether and call me. It’s like living in 1995 again.
