I find it strange that people are dumbfounded when astronomical prices are spent on so called collectable stuff. It's no different than art, if somebody decides they "have to have" something.
There are literally thousands and thousands of people floating around with more money than they can ever spend in multiple lifetimes and money has no value to them. They want something, they buy it.

Not to mention auctions very commonly equate to bidding wars and/or people sometimes running the price for 1- charitable reasons (if the auction benefits somebody or thing) or 2- if they’re trying to hide money on nonsensical things
That’s why it’s hilarious whenever somebody tries to claim ‘auction results’ are an accurate gauge of market value, |

Any item is worth exactly as much someone is willing to pay for it.

Wouldn't have paid more than CHF 182,500.

The issue is that the modern watch market essentially considers Longines to be mall rubbish.
But, surprisingly enough....there is a respect amongst vintage collectors for Longines and some of the biggest names in that section of the hobby pay up bigly for Longines. |

If we are carrying a phone what is the functional need for a watch? After that what possible logic could follow?
I just like wearing a watch

I think the misunderstanding is many people have no idea how popular Longines is.
Longines is one of the most popular watch brands in China. Way way more buyers in China than in the US so that says something. People forget but Longines sells over a billion dollars in watches annually. In 2021 it was the 5th most selling Swiss watch brand at 1.5 billion dollars. |

Very cool, the vintage market is fascinating. Despite having been a watch enthusiast for many years, I still find myself discovering things like this.
