Second language?
Or third What second language would you like to be fluent in? Chinese? Arabic? French? To be able to speak it like your native language.
I'm in doubt. Portuguese is a beautiful language and we go there often on holiday so it will come in handy. The same goes for Bahassa and I like French as well. But this is not about me, so gimme the low-down

Without a doubt, English.
After that, Italian.

Spanish...I know only enough to get by but would love to speak it fluently.
I learnt German at school and have picked up more since then but I should know more and should have built on the foundation of my GSCE. I know no French. None at all...it's something I plan to do once the Spanish and German are out of the way! J |

I saw that one coming! I feel the same about my own language.
a. I speak in a very thick Rotterdam accent (slow, almost NYC like, slur) and that is hard to get rid of. I'm not ashamed of it but it labels you in an instant and I don't like that. b. Dutch grammar is very complicated and I still make errors in writing And that IS something to be ashamed about.

Speaking of a second language. What is the best way to learn it besides going to that country and being totally immersed in it?
I took a couple of college classes but need to refresh and go on. Has anyone ever used Rosetta Stone? Does it work or just a gimmick? Allan |

Michel Thomas Spanish course is a great way to learn conversational Spanish.
My sister is married to a Canarian who speaks no English so I have used a combination of "Teach yourself Spanish" books and cd's, an english to Spanish dictionary and Michel Thomas's course and I manage quite well. When we went to Cuba in 06 to get married, I came across as fluent but it's only easy programmed stuff like ordering food and drink, talking about the weather, asking how people are...once the Cban folk thought I was fluent they flew off and I endled up tangled in a mix of Spanglish, shouting and hand gestures to get by J |

Latin would be good, purely to confuse people. If not, then I'd probably choose French, it's a lovely language to speak.

I'm fluent in French & Italian. I'd really like to learn an Asian language.

My wife and I were in Tiffany's in Chicago a few years ago talking to the salesman. At one point, he looked at her and said "Baltimore, right?" She said "Yes, how did you know?" He was a student of regional accents and said he could pick up most any one. I said, "OK, what about me?" He couldn't pick mine up. I really have no regional accent. I was born in Massachusetts, grew up in the New York suburbs, went to college in St. Louis, and have lived in the DC area for 45+ years.
So to answer your, question, yes, English is my native language, but I'm still learning it.
