Don't touch the watch!

Anyone remember the scene from American Psycho, where Patrick Bateman is sleeping in between two 'ladies'? One reaches out for his arm and accidentally touches his Rolex, which triggers him to flick away her hand while muttering 'Don't touch the watch!' (the novel said Rolex but they were not too happy with their name being mentioned in the film).
This is about the same feeling I'm getting when you show up at a party with a (new) Rolex on the wrist. Some people just feel the sudden urge to grab your wrist, clutch the case, or worse, the bezel to have a gander.
I always tense up when I hear the dreaded phrase, 'can I have a look' and bam, their fingerprints are all over the bezel. I even know a lady who take her dress and give it a quick wipedown before releasing my wrist.
Not sure how to address this, or it may be my OCD, but man it stresses me out!

Anyone else have this?? Sometime I'm really caught off guard!

Don’t care about finger-prints. We have a baby so my watches get covered in stuff and washed a lot.

But I have had this where the hand grabbing the watch is wearing a ring. And also when they ask for it to be handed to them and the first thing they do is hold it flat and clatter the clasp off the case back while holding it against a wedding ring.

I’m not completely OCD but please don’t rub metal and diamond things against the watch…

My 6 years old nephew grabbed my TT Sub once and tried to turn the bezel without asking for permission. He was applying pressure on the bezel clockwise instead of anti-clockwise. I asked him to leave the watch alone. He wouldn't let go. I repeated "let go off my arm". He insisted. I looked at his mother and she smiled. I gently but firmly took my arm away from the little monster.

He never says hello or goodbye, has a very annoying high-pitched voice and has to shout every time he opens the mouth. My in-laws don't do anything about it. My wife finds the whole thing hilarious. I quit wearing the watch when I visit my in-laws.

That's the next-level horror experience for me: hearing the question 'can I hold it/see it/wear it'? I've done it a couple of times, with people I absolutely trust and always in exchange for their watch. But I would go absolutely mental if the hand touching it would have a ring scraping against one of my Rolexes...that's not one but 14 sleepless nights in a row

Just got a new TT Sub Bluesy, I can't imagine having a kid abuse the bezel like that. Seems more like a serious parenting problem, good grief.

It’s just as bad when it’s my car. I don’t wear rings but I never understand why people who do aren’t more careful with things like car door handles and surrounding paintwork. Drives me nuts when I ask people to be careful with their ring and then they scratch the car anyway.

Maybe I do have OCD. Or maybe I just hate rings.

Some people really are careless. I can't be bothered if they want to store their Rolex in a working tumble dryer but come on, have some respect for other people's belongings!

Look, touch, enjoy. If I know you, will usually take it off so you can try it on. Over the decades have lent out a few here and there to friends I trust during luxury shows. Gives them time to gain a better feel for wearing it versus just briefly trying it on. Offered to lend my AD the M.A.D.1 Red. Ya know, stuff like that.

I do not enjoy seeing fingerprints on my watch and honestly cannot stand it when ppl ask to see my watch or worse yet, grab my wrist and put their hand all over it.

Saw a video about the watch Christian Bale actually wore in the movie just last night. As someone mentioned Rolex was not thrilled and did not want his character wearing the watch but his friends in the movie could. He actually wore a Seiko according to the video and after looking at it seems this is true. The line, 'don't touch the watch' is actually 'don't touch the rolex' in the book the movie was based on. Same was true of a suit manufacturer mentioned in the book, they did not let the Christian Bale character wear their brand. My weeknights are clearly exciting...

Never happened to me and it seems very strange these days that people would feel it OK to paw at you watch or no watch. Indeed what your describing sounds like the lead up to a theft; creating movement, touch and sensory distraction so you don't notice when the watch is removed. In that situation I would be inclined manually to release the grip and encourage/assist them to take a couple of steps back

Lol most people will disagree with you, but I know EXACTLY what you mean …. My advice is just don’t let them see it… or say yes take a look if you don’t mind I just cleaned it and I’m a watch nerd so don’t touch it .. they’ll get it.. they may laugh it off or even make a comment about you being a weirdo but who cares .. that’s way better than them messing it up.. plus they’ll be over it and onto the next thing before you know it

I would never allow a stranger to touch it, just friends and family. But some friends do have strange habits when they encounter a Rolex in the wild.

I used to be careful, now I mostly don’t care and wear the watch. If someone want to take a closer look, fine with me.
