Sim racing enthusiasts (Assetto Corsa, iRacing etc)

I built a sim racing equipment last year and I'm totally addicted to Assetto Corsa and Assetto Corsa Competizione. My son is 13 and I told my wife that I'm buying it for him but got addicted myself.

I decided to install the driving chair and wheel to a PlayStation. I know, I should have done it on PC but the PS versions are similar. You don't get the mods though, but those two games offer almost endless amount of challenges.

I started with Gran Turismo Sport and Gran Turismo 7, which are excellent driving games. But Assetto Corsa takes it a bit further. The learning curve is longer but the reward is much bigger.

F1 2020 is pretty good F1 game but the successors weren't quite at the same level. I don't care for the "story modes" and that kind of stuff. I also have Dirt Rally 2 but I really suck on that. Of course the old Colin McRae is in my collection too. Still pretty amazing.

Why I like Assetto Corsa so much is that when you buy the Ultimate Edition, you get all the cars and all the tracks right away. No gimmicky stories and frustrating car collecting (as on Gran Turismo). Just pure driving and car setting.

I don't play much online but I love hotlaps and setting up my car to get faster and faster times.

It's amazing how much these simulators have improved over the decades. I still remember playing Geoff Crammond's F1 games and that EA Sport F1 2002 back in the day. Don't get me wrong they were amazing games but the graphics and force feedback have come a long way.

Any other racing game nerds here?

Yeah true. Kids have much better reaction times.

I remember playing insane scores on some arcade machines back in the day. Now when I tried them on a emulator there's no way I can duplicate those.

Currently using a Moza wheel myself, mostly Assetto Corsa, iRacing, Beamng.drive
Spending most of my time on the Nordschleife.

Gran Turismo, Forza, the F1 games, Dirt Rally is all way too arcade, not very realistic but definitely fun sometimes.

Getting a decent direct drive Fanatec wheel made a big difference, especially on Assetto Corsa where my forearms are pumped after a long race!

It’s a bit nerdy, but I don’t have the time or money to go racing, so it’s the next best thing.

We also try to do an xbox F1 race before each F1 race weekend so that we know the track and learn the overtaking points etc, it makes watching the race more interesting.

What is the most authentic rally sim? I thought Dirt Rally 2 was one of the most realistic.

Are you sure you're not talking about Dirt, which is a different game (very arcadey but fun).

I have played Nordschleife so much that I actually moved to other tracks. Nurburgring GP (GT3) is very challenging to get a good time. I've probably drove 500 laps on that and there's still many seconds to find.

Dirt Rally and Dirt Rally 2 are definitely the most realistic rally sims(I have over 160 hours in them combined) , Richard burns is also quite popular in the sim community, but it is quite an old game and takes some work to get working on modern rigs. They are still way too forgiving when it comes to damage though. Try some rally scenarios in beamng.drive for comparison.

I'm obsessed with Spa Francorchamps and the Nürburgring, both tracks are within ~ 1 hour from my house and have visited them for many events. Never drove on track but will probably end up building something for the ring one of these years... Maybe the old Volvo 240 when I finally move onto something else as a daily.

Fanatec & Moza are the leading manufacturers of direct drive wheels, fanatec definitely being the better (and pricier)one of the two.
A long race is definitely a workout, and that is without all the G forces being applied to you, I cannot imagine what an F1 driver has to endure, being concentrated to that level and experiencing high amounts of force for hours on end, much respect.

It's amazing how the best pro drivers can drive consistently those lap times on the limit.

Take something like Monaco. It's a crazy track. I have practiced it a lot and can make a semi-decent qualifying run. In the video game. But 70 laps in a row in the real car is something else.

Especially back in the seventies and eighties when cars were almost as fast as today's F1's and very analog monsters. And much more dangerous, had much less safety innovations.

I agree. I used to do a bit of track stuff with a British Superbike team and the most I could do without starting to struggle was 5 laps flat-out. The physical side was hard, but the mental concentration was crazy, after five laps I’d start to make mistakes. How the riders and drivers do it for long races I’ll never understand!

Insane lap. I've made it at 1:57 and even that is pretty good as the genuine lap record is 1:56 something.

However this lap is not possible anymore after the ACC official updates. But still... great drive.

ACC is definitely one of the best driving sims ever made. I only have the lowly PS4 version which runs at 30fps. 60fps for PS5 and PC.

We have one, my 9 year old pretty much lives on it. I used it a lot when I was racing more, not nearly as much any longer. Great tool. He uses KRP (kart racing pro) and some iracing (f1600 or f2000 cars). We have asseto corsa and rfactor as well but prefer iracing out of the 3. Rfactor physics are very good however.

I have never played iRacing as I've built my simracing stuff around Playstation (AC, ACC only).

Maybe I should build a gaming PC? So many cool mods on Automobilista, like 1986 F1 mod, etc.

I strongly believe that many sim racing enthusiasts tend to equate increased difficulty with enhanced realism.

A guy I used to work with went to iRacing to work on their simulation. I hadn’t event heard of it (this was years ago). I thought about buying a setup for it but I don’t have enough time to “git gud” as the kids would say.

I have driven a bunch of Porsches on Sonoma Raceway, that was awesome.

Suika Game plays similarly to Sega's Puyo Puyo Tetris, Suika Game in which you have to line up matching fruits to make them disappear before the basket overflows.
