What do you dislike/hate the most about your job?

I'm currently a Network Administrator for a MSP and I like my job overall. And even though I have to crawl under people's desk at times or deal with server rooms the size of a coat closet, I would say being on-call is the part I disliked the most.

I understand the need for after hours service, but we don't have a dedicated team to do that so we have to rotate the on-call shift among the handful of us. I can say that I feel disdain when the answering service calls and I am sure that they can hear it in my voice when I answer. I really should try to be more pleasant since they are just doing their job to deliver the message.

But for some reason, I get really stress out when I am on-call. I feel that my weekend, evenings and nights for that whole week is put on hold and I can't have a personal life since I have to be available when I get that call or e-mail. I got awoken at 7 AM Saturday morning and I pretty much ended up working until pass noon. I usually goto a car meet on Saturday mornings, but I learn that lesson the last time I was on call where I had to drive to several different places to find a free Wi-Fi spot after a client called in about not being able to access his e-mail from home. I ended up at the mall trying to troubleshoot the issue with all the people talking in the background. I think the worse part is getting those calls in the middle of the night. The ones that wake you up from a sound sleep only to be able to not go to sleep afterwards.

So what do you dislike or hate the most about your job?

Hu Vu,

I'm in the same industry small lan rooms are my pet hate too, installing new switches is the pits especially when there is a loom for 400 cable to fight through from the last non neat installation, I feel like I need to neaten things up

I don't mind being on call so much as 80% of my after hours is all remote sort of stuff, installing new servers I prep is here at home, install then do all the magic stuff remotely :-) on bigger contracts being on call means a cash incentive if I get called in or not, and I'm not much of a sleeper :-)

The biggest annoyance I have is fiddlers / PEBCAK / 12 o'clock flashers having to rectify the same issue over and over again because of people fiddling with things they don't understand, AD, exchange and group policies are my fave, but my mailbox was there earlier I think you get my drift I know its money in my pocket but at the end of the month it inflates my time and I like to think I'm fairly quick at what I do and the bean counters do frown on going over budget and time even if its not my doing :-)

other than that,my job is just a step up from a past hobby and I love it

Dave.

I am in financial services sales for a large bank (Wachovia Bank, soon to be Wells Fargo). I really like what I do, but I HATE the micromanagement. It's such a waste of time and makes ineffcient us of time. With that being said, I hope to be self-emloyed some day, when the timing is right. Easer said than done :)

I'm a Carpenter/joiner fitting out bespoke libraries/kitchens etc to high end private users. The work is great and I really enjoy it. However I have to deal with a lot of designers and architects. Some are good to work with, but many are a nightmare to deal with and don't seem to understand basic principles of design and are constantly trying to re-invent the wheel. The thirty-ish London based designers are generally the worst and often still have some "white powder" in their nostril after visiting the bathroom. Frustrating is not the word.

The only thing I really dislike about my job is dealing with companies that don't have people like you on the payroll, i.e. people that know what they're doing with networks. I have to install/troubleshoot HD Videoconferencing systems. With major clients like ESPN, probably our best client, it's easy, they have MPLS, plenty of bandwidth and understand running video (especially HD) is a lot more intrusive and demanding on a network then surfing the internet. But most others, even large oranizations, have Joe Smith, who can't spell CCNA, or CCNP, but set up a couple computers and E-mail and thinks, and has convinced everyone at the company he is an IT expert. A typical conversation:

Me: "I'll need a staic IP, placed in the DMZ, subnet, Gateway and DNS addresses"
SUPOSEDLY IT knowledgable client: "Uh.... DNS? How do you spell that?"

Or on a trouble call....

Me: "Your absolutely, positively SURE the system has it's own, static, real-world IP address?"

SUPOSEDLY knowledgable IT client: "Yes, of course, absolutely!"

Me: "Ok, what is it, I'll log in and take a look"

Client: "192...... "

I am self-employed and I hate all the bills I may, but I love all invoices I send.

Well, I'm not carrying the pager anymore so they don't call me after hours.
The pet hate of my work is the work ethics of the young kids. 1. They take sickies whenever they can. 2. They choose what work to do and what not to do! 3. They don't take responsibility.

You think I'm kidding Frans but I really run in to this every day! What kills me is it's from the "IT Expert" at the company... I could go on and on with stories... Well, OK, since you got me started.

An "IT Expert" from blah blah blal corporation calls me and asks for help programming the VC system. I say sure, what can I help you with. Keep in mind this is a system they purchased and our putting it on THEIR network for use over the public internet, we're not supplying MPLS or anything. He asks me how to connect it to the network, I say: "Well, if you'll just go in to the LAN menu, see that?" He answers: "uh... OK, yes, I see that in the menu" "OK" I continue, "Program in your static IP address, subnet, gateway and DNS addresses in there." The guy is quiet for a second... so I ask: "Do you see where it says IP Address" Finally, the guy says: "Well, yeah, I see that... but what numbers do I put in there?"

I've been self employed in the computer industry for the last 4 years.

I love setting my own hours (mostly M-F 8:30 to 5:00), having control over what I service, writing off "toys" that are business related (like a new MacBook), and getting a very high since of satisfaction for what I do.

I am drowning in paper work that consists of filing Federal income taxes, State income taxes, sales taxes, business license, business property taxes, invoices, expense reports, and owners draws.

But the good far out ways the bad.

Choosing my own hours is the best too Barry with Jen pregnant I can start a little later in the day so I can look after Raiyne until the effect of morning sickness wear off. I agree with the paper work, drives me batty with all the double handling with taxes but all is good have to do it to keep the tax man happy luckily Jen is starting to take over the administration fun and games again now *phew*.

There's only one thing left to do and that's take justice into your own hands.
Pelt these young upstarts with liverwurst until they mend their evil ways (IMHO).
