Icon20 From GQ :Style Guy

This was on a Details link on GQ's website. It is on a glog by Glenn, the 'Style Guy'. It is between a guy and a Glenn.

What would be considered a gentleman's Rolex?

What is considered a playa's Rolex?

What is considered a hybrid (gentleman/playa) Rolex?

Q: At Christmas I received a stylish watch as a gift. Right after I tried it on, my sister informed me that it was a casual watch: not to be worn with suits, etc. What exactly differentiates a suit watch from a casual watch?

A: This is perhaps one of the most ignored distinctions out there: the dress watch versus the sports watch. A dress watch is supposed to be small and discreet, whereas a sports watch is supposed to be visible at 300 meters and glow in the dark. But today most people choose their watches not on discretion or appropriate utility but just the opposite. Why wear a little gold thing easily hidden by one’s shirt cuff when you can wear a diamond-studded watch bigger than an Oreo cookie, calling everyone’s attention to your apparently limitless disposable income? So the question is, fundamentally, are you a gentleman or a playa or some attempted hybrid of the two? I think the sports-watch trend started with extended wear of the Rolex Submariner. Men aiming for a dashing image wore their diver’s watches to the office, sending out the message “I may lease industrial washing machines Monday through Friday, but on weekends I stalk the tiger shark on the Great Barrier Reef.” In their dreams, of course—but isn’t that what most sartorial imagery is about?

My 2 cents. Dont listen to GQ or others wear what you like and set your own trends.

Don't be a playa hater! With a GMT like that you can show you are a playa in all time zones.

I saw in GQ recently what their style guy, Glenn O'brien, looked and dressed like. From that point on I have decided not to take anything that man says seriously, however I love the magazine and that section as well. Make your own decisions, life ends up more interesting that way.

What exactly differentiates a suit watch from a casual watch?

A: The mentality of the person.

I can wear my GMT just as comfortably on the beach in a shorty wet suit as I can dining with Prince Philip. And have.

To me a Rolex is not a fashion accessory. It is the best mechanical watch in the world, something used to tell time and not used to impress anyone but me.

Perhaps folks need to get over worrying about what other people think of them and just be themselves.

There are alot of opinions, i personally wear sport watches with suits and with a pair of blue jeans, i just don't like oversized milimeter watches, my tt black sub and ss daytona are 40mm watches and that's the perfect size to me not to big not to small just perfect.

I just don't get with the clown watch look, being to oversized looks just to unclassy in my opinion and the workings of an oversized watch appear to be too busy for my liking.

At my age, just remembering to wear pants when going out of the house is a fashion statement.

who cares is right

agree with a lot of posts that really don't care about what the GQ style guy says. even if Rolex went "out of style" i'd still wear them because they are incredible watches. period. 'nuf said.
