Chasing a birth year watch can easily trap you in accepting a lesser quality watch which eventually you may regret.

How do you know when it was made anyway ? The date on the papers are meaningless because it was quite common that the watch was sitting at the AD for a long time. The serial number charts are also not conclusive.
It will be only a best guess at best.

I’d rather buy the best example I could find, never mind the date

What is the difference between the 114060 and the 14060?

Going by serial numbers (at least in the past before the random serial introduction) is relatively accurate. I definitely didn’t go by the date of sale when I was searching and ultimately bought my birth year 5513. In the end it’s just a bit of fun and a twist to the hobby. Anyone who takes either the hobby or things like this too seriously won’t get the rationale. My 5513 has started many conversations, especially with people who have seen me with my other watches at some point. When I explain its age and my mission to find it I always get an “oh wow” and the conversation goes from there. However, as I said, it’s just a bit of fun and definitely not supposed to be so analytically examined The OP seems to have exactly the right mentality and reasoning of why he wants a birth year piece. Hats off to him.
