SDDS question

I tried on a SDDS this weekend. I have always disliked the writing on the inner face "Gas Escape System" or whatever it says. It just seems too bold and in the way. However, the one I tried on, I could hardly notice the writing. Has the writing changed? Did it get smaller? Does it just show up on high quality photos?

It hasn't changed. I don't think it's that noticeable in person. Many times it's appears more bold in photos.

it wont show up that much in "real". pictures are very deceiving.

I don't notice it (the writing) that much when I wearing one.

I do wish that the dial was a bit larger and the ring was smaller on not there at all; probably needed the ring design to allow 12,800 ft depth rating.

I've never really noticed the writing on the ring. Obviously it's alway there and can easily seen, but for some reason it just blends in between the bezel and dial.

The writing on the DeepSea hasn't changed, been the same font and size all along.

I think that people fail to realize that most watch photo's are done in macro mode so it really zooms in on the writing.

Personally I'd like to see more Rolex watches produced in 43mm, kinda hoping for a S/S and Platinum Yachtmaster to come it in the larger size.

Yeah, the text is much better in person. It always looks so BIG in pics.

The writing is hardly noticeable when the watch is on your wrist, but it shows up too prominently in photos.

I noticed this as well, after seeing one in the flesh I was amazed at how understated the writing looks compared to the photos.......a beautiful watch, I also think that the writing is kind of a neat touch.

Look , its there and it may be to some a bit outstanding . From day one when they presented the watch at Bazel I wanted one . I did much reading on it , and many said that it was far to bulky , too heavy and the writing was ridiculous . For a year I could not get hold of one , till my AD called saying that a client on the list had renounced buying it because it was indeed too big for him . I took of my SS Daytona , put it on (after the AD took out 3 links) and I thought .. Ok it is heavy compared to my 116520 but it looks great , feels great and I never noticed the writing till I got home and started playing around with it . I'm pretty sure most of the comments were done by people that had never seen or held one for real , copied the reviews of the others .
If you read through the poll results / comments from the thread I started on the SDDS owners satisfaction , you will find that only 2 regret buying it , but left no comment . All the others ( many) are extremely satisfied and the writing on it was never an issue even to the ones that didn't like the SDDS but there again they probably have never seen one in the flesh .

Somebody on another forum gave a very good answer for why the writing is obvious in photos and not in the real world. It's to do with how your brain processes information and in particular how the brain filters out ambience. Take the example of sitting in a lecture and recording it for later playback. When you sit in the lecture you will hear the lecturer very clearly and your brain will filter out the ambient noise. When you later play back the recording you made, you will hear all the ambient noise - mumbling from people sitting at the back, people coughing or sneezing etc. The brain works in the same way with the information it processes from sight. In a real world situation, the brain will see the writing on the rehaut as "ambient" and not important because it is focusing on the dial etc and so it filters it out. When viewing a photograph, the brain can't distinguish between the two and therefor the writing is more obvious.
