I'm confused. Submariner of GMT2?

Hi I am a newbie. I am an expert on fine automobiles but sadly I dont have a massive knowledge on Rolex but about 2 months ago I decided I really wanted one and about a month ago I made a purchase, a 16610 LV (Green Bezel). I bought it brand new for £2800. I loved it. Sadly about a week ago I made a very bad decision and sold it to a friend for £3200, yes I made a small profit but now I have no Rolex again!!!!

So I need a new one. I am torn between Submariner and GMT2. This time I intened to keep for at least 2-3 years before selling and trading up into Daytonas hopefully.

Its quite embarrasing but I dont even know the difference between the GMT2 and the Submariner. They look the same to me. I know about the different water depths etc and the different bezel. But in terms of physical shape and dimensions is there a difference, they look identical and equally delicious to me.

I would like some advice on which to go for?

Also in terms of 2-3 years time resale values, which would hold a larger percentage of its original value? The GMT2 or the Sub black or Sub green?

They are both fairly classic now. The GMT II has been discontinued, replaced by the redesigned GMT II C - look for photos to see the changes.

The GMT multi-time zone capability is the biggest difference. The clasp on the GMT II is also smaller than the Sub.

If you keep both MINT, resale value should be healthy...but don't don't don't buy it as an "investment"

The Stainless Sub will be redesigned and launched in March 2010 and available months after that. The current sub may be more desirable by buyers not liking the new Sub or not wanting to fork over the $$$.

However, don't buy either watch as an investment man...Buy what strikes your fancy.

The other difference (presuming you're referring to the 16710, not the new GMT IIc) apart from the ones you mentioned would be the movement inside - 3185 in the vast majority, and the 3186 in a very small number of later versions. This is effectively a modified version of the movement you'd find inside of a Submariner allowing for a fourth hand, which tracks time over 24 hours, as well as a quick set hour function. This means that you can (in theory, at least) track up to three time zones simultaneously.

Other minor differences, which, again, can't be seen very clearly, is that the Sub has a slightly thicker caseback, accounting for the greater pressure resistance, a Triplock as opposed to a Twinlock crown, and a marginally different bracelet with a diver's extension link.

Before you rush into a decision, have you tried on the new 116710? It is, in my opinion, in a completely different league in terms of quality, engineering and "feel".

Resale value ?? Forget about it. Just buy it,use it,smash it and crash it,have it clean and sell it for the same money 10 year later.

When I refer to a GMT2 I mean and brand new one so does that mean it must be a GMT2c? I'm not buying as an investment but you cant deny its flippin lovely when you can own something as lovely as a Rolex and actually sell it one day and get your money back. I am so used to losing money on stuff I like.

Whatever i buy it will be a brand new model and must be under 5k. I have a friend that works in Ernest jones and gives me 20% off.

The guy at the Rolex dealer was saying the new GMT2 is in far more demand than the Submariner. So many mixed views. One dealer said the LV was a flop and the regular Black bezel was actually claiming a premium. My own dealings seem to find that statement false.

Ideally I'd love a SS Daytona but nobody in London will even let me join a list.!!!

What are the advantages and disadvantages of each.

Ahh, if we're talking about the GMT IIc, then we're talking about a very different animal. The GMT IIc has a chunkier case (best seen in the new "block" lugs), ceramic bezel (as opposed to an anodized aluminium insert), 3186 movement, Triplock crown, and a much improved clasp. However, as of the present time, you can only get it with a black bezel, unlike the old model, where you had the choice of black, blue and red (Pepsi) and black and red (Coke).

If you include the Sub no date, Sub, GMT, and all the gold/no gold options there can be a significant difference in prices. All the watches are classics, and you can't go wrong.

All rumors point to the launch of the watch at the Basel world show in March....and many predict availability in stores 6 months after that. But you will be paying full retail and competing with the folks who MUST be the first on the block to have the watch.

I think any GMT is a great first Rolex, but you can't go wrong with either model. You just have to decide which sings to you the most. Welcome to TRF.

I tried both on and the GMT appeared to have thicker lugs. Meaning, that since I have smaller wrists, I could probably get away with wearing a Sub, but the GMT just looked too big

i'll go with the sub. classic and will hold value better.. The difference is the gmt2c has an extra hand for dual time zone. then it has the piolished center links,newer heavy band and bigger case.. yes they are almost identical..The ceramic bezel is nice,shiny,but some find it too busy.. I like the gmt2c in tt.. for ss ill go for the sub... Just my 2 cents!!

I was stucked between a rock and a hard place on this decision myself but decided to go with the newer GMT IIc for the simple fact Rolex has made alot of improvements to the watch. However, I will be keeping an eye out for the 2010 redesigned Submariner too...THAN.....a 2-tone Yacthmaster or 2-tone GMT IIc will finish off my collection. LOL...all you have to do is buy one and you will be hooked!
