GMT II 16710 M series with 3186 movement

I was in Atlanta this past week and was at a Rolex AD who showed me a 16710 GMT M series. They claimed it has the 3186 movement in it. Passed the Crown Test Method and Wiggle Test. They had two. A Coke and Pepsi.

I havn't seen much communication/activity on these watches during the past serveral months.

Any input on whether or not this still could be a collectible in the future
would be appreciated.

our post was tacked onto the bottom of a 2 year old thread and may have not got much attention so I gave it it's own post..

Now, to your question:

It is unknown what the future will bring. Some are buying these because they believe it to be a good chance.

I think that if you look at the entire Rolex history, they have had many movement changes within a model line, and have had many that have only used the latest movement for a short while... None of those has ever become a top performer on the collectors "must have" lists..

This one could prove to be the exception....who knows.. But still, it is a very collectible watch in it's own right and one of Rolex premier achievements..

I hope so--they did not make it long with that movement. I own a Pepsi GMT with Eleven dial and 3186 movement--M series. I think a few of the Z's had the movement as well. Regardless of anything it will always be a classic watch and one that should be in a collection--always has had good demand!!

There were still many thousands of them made with the 3186 so it will take many, many decades for them to be rare and worth a darn.

Thank you all for your input. I really like the look of this watch and wasn't really looking for a collectible but when the sales person told me about the newer movement it sparked my interest to learn more. I think I may purchase this one if it is still available (maybe both).

I've alway liked the GMT since I saw Tom Selleck in Magnum wearing it many years ago. He has also sported this watch in all five of his Jesse Stone movies. I'm sure this is old news to most of you.

There is no reason why not , only last week one went for little money on Ebay France . Hadn't it been that I just got a GMT2c I might have had a little go at it . Then again , I'm shit scared of buying anything like that on Ebay .

All you have to do is search out the prices they are asking on line already and also you don't see to many for sale. I believe the GMT's with 3186 are speaking for themselves. Of course most of the answers you receive on the forums will depend on weather the people responding do or do not own one. Buy yourself one or two and enjoy them. Good Luck

Buying any modern Rolex as a collectors piece is dubious at best. I say buy it if you love it, not for what it may or may not be worth in 20 years. There are so many 16710s on the market that it's unlikely in my opinion to be a collectable. Will collectors in the future put any emphasis on the 3186 GMT - no one knows.

I don't think that recent prices or testimony from current owners will carry much weight as years go by.. All you need to do is look at the initial frenzy for Sub LV's, and the premiums paid for the Milgauss GV's and the initial SS GMT IIc's... Plenty of speculation......... and many, many will never get the premium they overpaid for these watches back.......

In my opinion the Italians are the trend setters for what is to become
a classic and collectible Rolex, also the most knowledgeable of all collectors.
What remained unsold in the USA during the late 60's 70's and 80's
the Italians would beg to have.
As soon as the GMT-Master II ended a long term production and the ceramic
came into play these same Italians were all over the 16710's with all the little
differences and paid "big" money to get them.
Now the hype is gone and they will not pay over 4200 dollars for one.
Will it be a classic like the 1675..?...Of course it will...give it 25 years...
