Roled magazine ad

I received this Rolex magazine ad as a Christmas gift. It's not a reprint, but an actual magazine page with something about Sumo wrestlers on the other side. The best part is the small print at the bottom:

"The Rolex Submariner. Tested pressure-proof down to 660 feet. Officially certified, self-winding superlative chronometer. In steel $428.50. In 18kt gold with matching bracelet $3,450."

I think the magazine was from 1974.

Too bad rolex ad doesn't pricematch. i'd image the look on someone's face if I bring this copy into the store and ask them to do a price match.

My favorite was one of where a Datejust is shown being boiled in water and claimed with no resulting harm to the movement.

1974 is about right. I paid $400 for my GMT in '75 and the sub was more if memory serves me.

It's too bad Photobucket limits the amount of scans you can have, otherwise I would post some of the hundreds of Rolex ads I have over here. But I take requests, so ask away if there is something in particular you want to see.

JJ, you sure like to smile alot. I guess its from being cool. Anyway, I guess back in the early 70s your average watch was probably $5-10 bucks. Whatever thoses watches were are probably worth $100-500 now. I am thinking Hamilton, Longines, etc.. A Rolex for $400 was like $2500-4000 for a Datejust today. Depending on your profession, you probably cleared $250-300 every 2 weeks. Times have changed.

Hey David,

Not sure if you can comply with this request, but one of the very latest TIME magazines (mid-Nov. issue) had a cracker of an ad for the TT Blue Sub. Think you can find that one and post it here for all to enjoy?

Thanks - JJ
