How is your personal experience in auctions?
Do you bid early, in the middle or as the last second bidder before the gavel falls?
The Rolex watch auction in CT Feb 17 should be interesting.

Has anyone gotten a fantastic deal? I am sure there are good stories.
Anyone with bad stories to tell?

have been to a couple auctions and people overpaid for everything. Isaw presidents in not perfect condition with no box or papers for over $10k. I saw a pepsi dial go for $7,000

I like dealing with sellers that I know...and can go back to if I have issues. I stay away from auctions.

I use sniping software that bids during the last couple of seconds before the auction ends. The benefit of this is that it avoids bidding wars between myself and other prospective buyers. I pay about $50 per year for this service and highly recommend it, there are free services that offer the same thing but are not as good in my opinion.

The people that run the auctions work on a commission and know how to get people excited and over pay.

I went to a US custom sized items auction. US customs does not run it and eventing went for way more than it was worth

No matter where you buy, keep emotion out of it and be an informed buyer and you will be fine.

I think the proper mindset at auctions, both live and online, is to set a price limit for the lots you plan to bid on and then stick to it. Having worked for Gooding and Co., I can tell you that emotions can get in the way of a level-headed purchase.
