Just what's so special about a Daytona?

So we know that the Daytona's got a 'cluttered' dial, no date, got a chrono function that's seldom used but, just what makes a Daytona so special above the rest of the sports models in the professional line? That makes me want more than just 1 of the same model and it's different variations?

Is it the mystical air that surrounds it? How the SS models are selling few grands above list? or cause the celebrities are wearing it?

Top honest reasons I bought mine:
1. It looks very cool
2. It carries the ROLEX brand name
3. It was tough to obtain (not everyone is wearing one)
4. It looks very, very cool
5. It holds it value - yeah whatever....
6. I feel good wearing it
7. It looks really really cool
8. Dardeca offered me a great deal
9. I really wanted it
10. Did I mention it looks really very cool...

Certaintly not because what any celeb is wearing and certaintly not because it sells for over MSRP!!!

If I could find one for MSRP with out a 3 year wait I would get one as I think they are a lovely piece. Until then I will just admire them from a distance.

Edit. Forgot about Steve Mcqueen and Paul Newman, ok they are pretty cool guys.

I like a bigger watch, with date that has no enamel numbers in the bezel that wear out. I think the Daytona is a beautiful watch......the rose gold black face is AMAZING....so to me it is not on my list....although i do agree it is a special watch that many people love.

I believe every WIS watch purchase is based on subjective emotion.

The dial may be cluttered, no date function, and most owners will probably never use it to measure velocity, but their owners' enthusiasm is best described as 'fanatic' for personal reasons: exclusivity, grail reasons, missing piece to a collection, will hold its value, Karis wears one , etc.

Actually the same reason people buy the DSSD, though admitedly, that does have a date function.

Star power, exclusivity, cool looks. No more Daytonas will measure timed laps than DSSDs will go to the bottom of the depths, but it doesn't matter. They're cool.

Well I must admit that in the beginning I didn't liked them at all.
But spending time here and on other fora and drooling over fantastic pictures made me change my mind.

I really dig a WG Daytona with the Panda dial, but......waaaay out of my reach I am afraid.

Ohh well, I still have others to play with...

To me, the Daytona has heritage. Just like any of the sport Rolex, it represents who I am. I am an avid car lover, so the Daytona is suitable and fits my personality. It also symbolizes success to me (but all Rolexes do). But the SS Daytona is such a rare piece that many would agree that you would have to be somewhat successful to be able to purchase one. Just my thought.

Cluttered dial? I think not, far from it. It's one of the best looking chronos out there with a great in-house movement. And it's a very comfortable watch to wear. I could go on and on...

it's sheer beauty...own one and each time you wear it you cannot take your eyes off it.
There is nothing "cluttered" about the dial...it's design is sublime...and when you put it next to similar chronos is speaks "class" way above them all.....and class is what the "Daytona" is all about.

I was into the Daytona 18 years ago but kinda grew out of it when I discovered I use a date feature and it looked petite next to the Submariner. I snicker at what the SS Daytona is going for now on the used market. I remember when they weren't that popular and the TT and solid 18K was the ones to own. Buy what you love and not whats popular. Resale is meaningless if you plan on never selling the watch you truly love.

No, I don't know that.

And, I do use it quite frequently.

In other words, I don't know who this "we" you speak of refers to, but it sure doesn't include me.

Oh no... Not another 'Whachu talkin' bout, Willis' thread... Don't you people understand? Taste is taste, IT DIFFERS. Do you REALLY give a if some guy you have never met likes/dislikes your watch? Who cares?! What's important is that YOU like what you have on your wrist.

Evidently, and judging by the frequency of such posts, I'd say the answers are (i) yes and (ii) many people on this forum. As to why, well, I guess some people need the validation of others?
