I understand your Rolex comments. Owning 5 and scouting for my 6th I tend to wear my Maurice Lacroix (Jour et Nuit) on days I don't feel like being interrogated. I work with high net individuals who are used to Grand Complication Patek's and Breguet pocket watches but for some reason when I wear one of my Rolex watches I always seem to get the 101 questions. I just say laugh it off when folks pass comments, enjoy your passion in watches and don't ever think wearing a Rolex is embarassing!

strange, on the contrary i never get people who notice my watch. I do get glances from other watch wearers, be it omega, breitliing, tags and almost every guy in a rolex. but those glances are usually to size one anothers watches up to see which one costs more.

no body ever compliments my TT DJ...

I've always had an ambivalent relationship with my Rolexes.

I detest the fact that a Rolex is perceived as a status symbol by virtually everbody; as a corollary every dumb mofo who wants to show off buys a Rolex.

However, to be perfectly fair, I guess it depends on where you're in life.

I think respect should be given to anyone who is serious enough about watches to go out and purchase a Rolex, be it a gangster rapper or a watch aficionado. The worst of them all Z Z are people that buy fake Rolex's and try to pass them off as real, those people only care for the status, but cant shell out the coin. Like Ferrari's they are great watches/cars but their names supersedes that of the performance, quality, craftsmanship or what not. That is probably why most people who see a Rolex wont know it is one unless their told.

The price is also another thing, Rolex is famous for being expensive although their are plenty of watches out there that cost ten times of what a Rolex retails for. Most people I encounter are jealous of that determining factor and perceive you as having the money to own a Rolex as snooty and rich. Also most Rolex's are bought as a Veblen good, so that adds to its prestigious status symbol image. Most people I encounter who know enough to recognize Rolex ask "is that real" to which I just faux-grin. Although it does feel good to meet another Rolex owner who compliments my watch and we exchange small watch talk and chatter, though this happens rarely.

I've only ever had one person comment on my watch, a client at work and it turned out he was also in to watches.

I should imagine that age does play a factor. I'm 33 and at this age people have cars, houses, family etc so not many of your peers are going to bat an eyelid over a Rolex on your wrist.

I remember seeing a young man in a pub, must have been 19-20 years old wearing a sub and I have to admit that I did think "I wonder who gave that to him?"...Ir was none of my business, but I guess it illustrates the point.

1. Stop wearing two Rolex's at once and many fewer will notice.
2. "What's the watch." "Rolex." "What did that cost you?" "Way too much."

I've only had two comments on my Rolex in the last year. One was from a salesman in a jewelry store in the Cayman Islands. The other one was from a car salesman.

Like wise in well over 30 years of Rolex watch wearing, you could count on one hand the number of people that have noticed any watch I wearing world wide, no matter what the brand.

I have read numerous times on many forums, Rolex watches referred to as the "Texas Timex", meaning there are many people who live in Texas own one. I have never been to Texas so I cannot vouch for this first hand. Regardless, there seems to be quite a bit of wealth in Texas, so I am shocked that anyone would be overly impressed about owning a Rolex. When people ask me about my watch, which is very rare, I usually say it is a GMT, Sub or whatever style it is. I certainly do not say it's a Rolex.

Mike Royko did a hilarious article a couple of decades ago about watches. I won't go into the whole idea, but the punchline was, "It was a gift from my wife."

I think an answer like that should limit the follow-up questions.

My advice :

Create 10 witty responses and use them in rotation each time you're asked the question, no sweat, no need to get yourself in any sort of tizz.

If you can't do that, buy a SpeedyPro, IWC or Zenith.

I agree 100% with you Pete. I live on the Cape and went into a local jeweler to have my Rolex bracelet sized and the guy started interogating me. "What did it cost... etc., etc.". So I told him it was a gift, and he still kept pressing the issue. So I told him straight up... "Do you usually ask someone who gives you a gift how much they paid for it?" Shut him right up. He took the watch into a glass windowed backroom and gave it a good once over with his magnifying goggles, took off the neccessary links, came out and made some lame attempt at an excuse about knowing how to take care of it, and didn't even bother to charge me. I think he knew he pissed me off and didn't want to lose a potential customer. I mean granted, I didn't walk in in a suit and tie, but that was just totally unprofessional on his part so I let him have it.

This is so opposite to my experience. In the 2.5 years I've been wearing Rolex wristwatches, I can count on one hand the number of times I've been asked about them. My advice is to just play off whatever comments you get that make you uncomfortable. Asking someone how much something costs is incredibly tacky.

no one has really made comments like this to me yet, and usually no one notices my watches anyway.

I am also 22 years old and have only been asked once about my watch. It is a two tone submariner. The one time happened a week ago when I was at a Subway. The guy behind the counter asked if it was a Seiko or Casio dive watch, to which I replied it was a Casio. In a little over a year since purchasing the sub, that was the only time.

But I am not going to hide my watch. I wear it everyday doing any and all activities. I would answer differently if an intelligent person asked about my watch compared to a bum for obvious reasons.

This is one of my huge pet peeves. This includes anyone who buys any sort of fake high end good and the first name that comes to mind actually is Louis Vuitton. I mean, what are people really trying to prove by buying fake items and passing them off as real. Actually come to think of it, what are you trying to prove by buying fake items to begin with?

Simple and easy, replica or fake items are illegal to purchase & own, what are the chances you get caught? don't know but I'm one of those smart ones who believe in not risking into this kinda of things.
I don't consider myself as rich but my common sense has this; few thousands of $$$ are much cheaper than few 10s or 100s of thousands of $$$ and possible jail time when get caught.
(same goes to my wife, she only buys the authentic items; only the difference between us is that I'm in much of preferable to buy used items, while she only goes after brand spanking new ones.)

Just my $.02
