Will the new Sub-C "kill" the GMT IIC?
It seems to me that GMT IIC buyers have been picking up the watch because the really like the new look/case/bezel/dial but what will happen to GMT IIC demand and value once the new Submariner Ceramic comes out?
The Sub-C will have: maxi hands and dial, the new beefier case, ceramic bezel (120 clicks like the DSSD?), a cleaner look without the green hand/text and on top of that the new state-of-the-art bracelet with glidlock for added comfort and WITHOUT PCL. I mean, if you are into the new look (let's leave that discussion out of this thread) what is not to love/prefer in the new Sub-C? What is your take? Cheers, PSV |

Hmmmmm.....good point. And that's probably the main reason why we are now seeing so many SS GMT-IICs up for sale...............all in anticipation of the upcoming Ceramic Sub. JJ

I don't know, The SUB and GMT have always co-existed, and I think that the previous models had more in common.
Yes, the Bicolored bezel gave the older GMT an identity of its own, but they had similar cases, dials, and both had brushed oysterbands. You could argue that the old Sub should have destroyed the old black bezel GMT, but Rolex still seemed to have sold plenty of those... I think that the true attraction to the GMTc had to do with how much of a change it was from it's predecessor...It really should have been the GMT III for all of the upgrades...but to look at the SUBc and the classic Sub...very little going on there...infact, put a SUBc next to an LV with black bezel...I'll bet it'll take a closer look to tell the difference. The new GMT, with it's PCL, 4th hand, and flash of green stands on its own in my opinion. I think that it and the new SUBc would make good stable-mates in my watch box... |

I do think the Sub-C is going to kill the GMT.....seems everyone wants a Sub-C, and everyone else is unloading the GMT II-C Which is a shame.

Maybe it will probaby force Rolex to go back with the bi colored bezels on the GMT-III C s, if they're able to to it with ceramic...

GMTIIc for me
I have been going back and forth between the GMTIIc and Subc for almost a year now. Waited for Basel to introduce the SS subc... waited some more. Always wanted GMTIIc for functionality, Sub for classic looks... even made a definitive decision a couple of weeks ago to go for the Subc when available to buy. The wait is over... I am getting my 1st Rolex - SS GMTIIc - next week !!!!!

I don't think it will.......I am not a Sub' hater by any stretch at all, I am sure that one day I will have one......I am accutely aware that for a collector with 5 Rolex and 2 Tudors (almost) that it is unusual to not have a Sub'.....but....I have 2 Tudor chronos a GMTIIc and an Explorer II from the sports line....I could easily have gone for a Sub'....but I didn't.....don't ask me why......I just found the others more attractive somehow.....I think some people will still prefer a watch with a chrono or 24 hour function.....not everyone....but some.....I don't dive by the way (but I would like to at some point)....maybe that's why the pull for a Sub' has never been so strong.......I can however use my chrono and 24 hour functions....regularly...

Maybe a little, but it'll come back.
I have a IIc and have no interest in the SubC as I have a 16610 already. I have an older and a new case. Done and done.

Right, but the older GMTs had the smaller crown, which a lot of people found more appropriate/pleasing (in fact, I wasn't one of them, it kept me from buying either the GMT or the Exp II's) + the two-colored bezel, I thought that set it apart more than the new one.
I guess the larger digits on the GMT bezel though makes it appear larger in size than the Sub... |

By the way, this post is by no means meant to make GMTIIC-owners feel bad about their watches/purchases! :-)
I was "this close" to buying one myself recently but couldn't do it with the PCL, my AD talked me out of having them brushed as it never looks quite right in her opinion. Enjoy'em! |

It will be interesting. One less complication, somewhat different clasp, it will still look like a GMTIIC in general size - and they're charging more for it than a GMTIIC - the people will decide.

That's why I opted to get a TT GMTiiC now then grab a SS SubC later when the price stabilizes.

I don't think the new Sub will kill the GMT II c. Though they both are very similar, they are still different watches with different capabilities and ideal usage. The Sub is obviously more conducive for the diver, and the GMT for the air enthusiast. It's kind of like saying why would you own more than one SUV or one two cars that are the same color. Lots of companies have products that are very similar but still have a strong demand for both.

No Rolex is ever a bad purchase, but IMHO the Sub has always been the watch to buy and the GMT has always been the ugly sister - if ever there was such a thing lol. What Im trying to say is the Sub will always outsell the GMT forever and a day.

I think when both price & inventory stabilize, both models will do well in demand. As most have said, its apples & oranges between the two watches - there are followers for the Sub & followers for the GMT.

Well, of course the Sub-C won't "kill" the GMTIIC per se, just an attention-grabbing headline ;-), but I somehow suspect that it will lessen the current demand for the GMTIIC as you now can get a SS sport Rolex with the new model and brushed bracelet, which seems to give the tool look that so many of us covet.

imo - whoever loves a diver will love the new Sub-C, and a true GMT fan will stay with the GMTIIC....
wouldnt be surprised seeing people having both in their collection! |

IMHO the Sub-C won't kill the GMT IIC, but with the only bezel option for both being black, they're closer to each other than ever. I think with the new Sub-C release GMT IIC sales would probably decline. That is, until Rolex could finally release a ceramic Pepsi and/or Coke version to liven up the GMT again.

Of course not, has the sub killed the GMT till now? No. They have always shared many common components.

The SUB is probably the most popular (and recognized) sports watch EVER MADE so it pretty much kills not only all other Rolexes in popularity, but offerings from pretty much every other brand as well.
By the same reasoning, the GMT2c doesn't stand a chance popularity wise. But as a GMT2c owner, I'm glad that there aren't as many GMT's around. I love it when people ask me if I'm wearing a Sub and I tell them it's a GMT2. They're like "huh?" All the other subjective things don't really matter. Some people will like the brushed links, other will like the polished links. Some will want the 4th hand, others will want depth rating. Buy what you like because comparing which watch will be more popular one is a futile debate.

The biggest set-back I see is the similarity in these 2 models. The SS Sub and SS GMT-IIC have virtually the same looks................so some may hesitate to have both in their collection.................unless you have the TT GMT-IIC!! Ahem!! Ahem!!

Unless they make a pepsi ceramic bezel the GMT is dead

Perhaps the question should be- will the GMT IIC hurt sales of the new Sub C since they are so similar? A buyer might consider the GMT with its added complication and cheaper (by $250 as of now) price. Also, the PCL factor adds to the beauty of the watch, imo, and makes the GMT both a tool watch and a dress watch. I would chose the GMT IIC over the new Sub C if I saw them side by side in an AD's showcase. The only factor that makes the new Suib desirable to me, as I stated in another post today, is the Glide-Lock clasp.

I can't even begin to imagine what "next new" material Rolex can possibly come up with?? I think they've run out of ideas that suit our taste!!

We know that and that's why it's NOT the GMT-IIC!!
