Best first Rolex?
Hi all,
Like many of you, I've always seen the Rolex as the ultimate punctuation of having "made it." I never really had much growing up, but watching those James Bond movies gave me something to strive for. I worked my tail off my whole life and I now think I am financially ready to get my first Rolex. My question is which Rolex to get? I want something durable, masculine, accurate, no-fluff type of watch. Previous watches I own are a GShock 6900, a Movado Eliro, and a Marathon TSAR and CSAR. I think I want a Submariner, since that's what 007 wore, but my daily watch is already a tool watch (Marathon TSAR). The truth is I'm not very knowledgeable of Rolex watches and I need help in making the best choice for me. I have no qualms getting a pre-owned watch as long as it has long life ahead. Thanks in advance |

You should always go with the one that catches your attention first.......... The Sub..
Otherwise, you will always question your decision and not be satisfied.........

if the sub is what you wanted as a kid, go get it. it's a timeless icon. of course, there are other great rolex watches out there like the explorer 2 and the gmt2. i wanted a sub as a child, too, but ended up with the gmt2 for other reasons, and loving it!

The sub would be an excellent entry watch into the world of rolex. Also as tools said since that was the watch that first caught your attention then go for it! The sub has a reputation of being a hardy toolwatch that can take a beating better than most watches out there. If you are looking for something dressier you can try for the datejust :)

The sub is the iconic Rolex. The 16610LV the anniversary addition has the maxi dial (larger dial markers) that give the dial more pop. The green bezel is also adds some color, but can be changed out for a black.
You just can't go wrong with a classic 16610 sub. Hopefully you wear it because it is a great watch, not as a symbol of "I've made it". That is something you wear on the inside in the way you conduct yourself.

Welcome to the Forum and boy do you have a tough decision to make...as has been stated the Submariner was the first one that caught your eye so it would be a good choice for your first Rolex!!!
Also go to some AD's and try them on, see how they feel and if you want to buy a pre-owned Rolex you will have tried them on before you buy even if you go with a seller on the internet or here on this Forum(we have some very nice sellers of new and/or pre-owned watches right here on TRF)!!!

I totally skipped the part where you wrote you wore 6900 gshock.
Funny thing is, this past weekend I made a thread where I said I walked in with a casio 6900 came out with my first rolex 116610 ceramic! I was debating but the sub and it's styling made it a no brainer. Go to some AD, try them on. Have fun! Enjoy your watch hunt! |

I have to agree with all the other posters: get a Subbie. You can't go wrong no matter what your tastes are from serious tool watch to elegant dress watch; the Subbie does it all.

A Sub is a good choice, but to be truthfull, any Rolex is a good choice. Most of your watches are like the Sub in style so you could go for something slightly different. Have a good look around before you purchase, there may be another model that catches your eye.

You really cant go wrong with any of them. Take this opportunity to check out the Rolex website and get an overall idea as to what is out there. Then head out to an AD or 2 and look at some watches first hand. This all should help you to confirm if the Sub still is the one you want.
When spending this much on a watch there is no reason why you shouldn't confirm your initial desires and make sure this is still what you want. No harm no foul, take a look around. Happy hunting, thats part of the fun.

Going to go with the flow and say Sub here as well. It was my first and only Rolex and I'm pretty content. As mentioned by various posters, the Sub is an icon that can either be dressed down or dressed up.
I work in a corporate office where everyone wears suits and a tie- the Sub feels perfectly at home in this environment. I also don't appreciate having to dress up everyday so as soon as the moment permits, I look like a bum. The Sub is well suited (no pun intended here) for leisure, relaxation etc. Black on black say sporty and serious. J |

A Submariner/Sea Dweller of some type. I prefer the 14060M. It's the cheapest, lightest, and simplest available, but by no means a starter watch--it's the essence/form/telos of a sports watch.

I suggest you go down to the nearest AD, and try them all on for size.
What you think you want and what your wrist really likes may be different watches. Happy Hunting!

If the Sub appeals to you, buy it, new or used, and you'll never need another watch. If you get the Rolex that fits your lifestyle, I'd be amazed if you wear the rest of the collection.
