DJ or Sub
I have an EXP and love it so much, the elegant look and classic style, that I dont wear it as I should for fear of scratches.... I need an everyday watch and was thinking the DJ or Sub.... any opinions would be appreciated ..... love that silver faced DJ with domed bezel and stick markers, but the Sub sure seems like a tough S.O.B.

This is certainly one of my favorites, but if you are worried about scratches with your Explorer, then this won't give you much peace of mind. I say just wear the watches as they were intended and have them polished out every 5-6 years at service time. You can't go wrong with either choice.

The Explorer is one tough SOB, too.
In fact the entire Oyster Perpetual line consists of tough SOBs. I think that it's a shame that you pamper your Explorer. I now have both the DJ and the Explorer and the Explorer is my beater as a matter of default. It's just tougher than any watch that I owned and I stopped worrying about it and started wearing it. I bought the DJ because I just could not help myself and I thought it looked a little dressier than the Explorer, although the Explorer is pretty dressy in its own right. Although, the watches will have different roles, I have no reason to doubt the robustness of either and I think you should look at it that way too. Also, even though my Explorer has some scratches and scuffs on it, it still looks fantastic.

If you can't get over your fear of scratches then I definitely recommend the Submariner and possibly put it on a NATO to make it impossible to scratch.

Since you already have an Explorer that you can wear with the formal stuff, I suggest getting the 40mm choice.

I concur... but once you go down that road/rationale of another Rolex (because, because, because...) it becomes much easier to justify another and another...
See my initial post: http://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=115558 and here I am today 2 more Rolexes down the road, with a COMEX SD, and as of this week the V serial MK2 DeepSea... Oddly enough... my SDs look like toys next to my new DSSD, never thought that could ever happen! |

The DJ is an awesome daily watch (with a lower acquire level then a sub.)

Rolex does not need to be pampered, and the tiny scratches polish out nicely for the first 50 years that you wear them. If you have an EXP, not EXP II, I would suggest the Sub as a sportier watch. DJ's can be had for a lot less money in the used market, though. If you have a black face EXP, as Sub isn't much of a change and isn't any tougher unless you're diving.
Going with a DJ let's you pick from an amazing group of options to set it off from your EXP. |

If you love the Explorer and want a true beater, why not go for a second hand/NOS previous generation Air King? You can get it with virtually the same dial (though you can get other dial colors), and the fact that it's slightly smaller than the Explorer means you'll be less likely to ding it on stuff.
