Any problem at airport wearing a solid gold Rolex?

I'll be travelling internationally soon and to those with experience: is there any problem wearing a solid gold Rolex at the airport? I don't wear it on the street or anything just on dates or special occasions, but would prefer my beloved watch be close to me instead of far away in another country.

Gold attracts the eye a lot more than steel. Leave it home,better safe than sorry. Unless you're 100% sure you'll keep it covered all the time or hang around very safe areas. Everything can happen,or nothing can happen. Where are you going anyway ?? If you're going to Paris you will be safe,if you go to Naples,Italy,you will get your harm chopped by the immigration officer himself...

I'll make sure it's covered by a long sleeved shirt or sweater at all times, I mean actually passing through the airport peoples and scanners. Can they try to charge me a "tax" or something?

I would be very nervous about taking it off for security and having it leave my sight while it goes throught the scanner. Better leave it home and wear a SS watch.

It may be rash but it's very close to the truth and there's nothing wrong about warning people. How do I know ? I live in Italy and you cannot even imagine the story I've heard about Rolex mugging in that area.

I wouldn't worry about losing it at the scanning stage. It's safe enough imo.
With regards to tax, if you're wearig it's not going to be problem, even more so if it looks like it's been worn for a while.

Some airports keep a little person in the scanner to steal nice watches as they go through. This little guy has gotten away with dozens of solid gold watches over the years!

I wouldn't worry too much about the airport itself but rather where you are going. Barcelona, Rome, and many others are beautiful but have more pick pockets than you can shake a stick at. Be careful.

you can request an individual inspection if you wish. your watch will not be on a conveyor belt with other people's belongings.

I asked that question of airport security a short while ago. They told me that precious metals are no problem, they are not even 'seen' by the scanners. You could walk through with a pound or more of gold watches and gold chains around your neck and the scanner wouldn't even flicker. (I will leave it to others to speculate what that might mean to actual security concerns if something that was 'banned' were made of 'precious metal').

As far as being 'taxed', property can only be 'taxed' if it's entering the country permanently. Since your property will presumably be staying with you until your return, that obviously won't be an issue when you are travelling. There is a tiny possibility you may be asked a question about an article when you return home, but if you can provide even minimal documentation showing you already owned it on your departure, that will answer the question. Rolex watches carry a country code on their cases as well.

My watch itself does not set off alarms, but when I've (stupidly) forgot to remove other items and have been requested to remove it, I refuse and opt for a hand search.

So no, it's not a problem getting through security.

I haven't flown international this year.....but last year I was travelling to western Europe & didn't take my watch off going thru security, just raise my left arm showing watch, no problems.
I have flown domestic (USA) this year....July & did same thing, no problem.
But then again I have this saintly halo above my head....maybe that has something to do w/ it?

I heard last year where valuables can disappear in the security screening areas...not the guards...but by pick-pocket types, who will distract you (they do this for a living) in the typical confusion of these areas...and "poof" your watch could be gone. I DO NOT place my watch or wallet in the tray and wear/carry it through the metal detector and have had NO problems in North American travel. Of course gold attracts lots of attention, so keep your baby close to you and if your really concerned, get it insured. Wearing it in the back roads of some countries...well, that's not advised and best left in the hotel safe. Cheers

When going through metal detectors. take your hand and cover your watch and press everything against your body (stomach area). metal detectors have difficultly detecting metal covered by flesh.. hence the reason for x-ray machines.

If I am worried about it, I take it off before I get to the airport and put it in my briefcase and then take it out again after passing through security. That way it doesn't draw any unwanted attention.

Make sure it is insured. Wear it and be happy.
