You mean the cal. 3185 movement, right? the GMT II switched from the 3185 to the 3186 w/the late Z series watches. From what is generally known, all the M series that followed the Z have the 3186. Someone posted a list of the letter series and their production dates recently, so you might want to do a search for it. Generally, Z is about 2006 production, and M is approx. 2007.

I believe the 3186's were introduced late '06 with the late Z serials thru all of the M serials.

NO, a LATE "Z" series watch and all the "M" series watches would be. Only use the series code as the key. Do NOT go by when a seller tels you the watch was sold new or take their word for its manufacture date. If you run across a Z series watch you will have to have it opened up to be sure you are getting the cal 3186 movement.

I actually ended up with a Z serial number with a 3186 in it so I did plenty of reading about this before I opened it, if you get to see it in person there are a few tests you can do before you have to open it to initially see what kind of movement is in it. they are as follows:

1.wiggle test ( apparently unreliable) ( if you google it you will see how to do it)

2. seeing how many times the hour hand moves during one rotation of the crown (8 hours per revolution should mean 3186)( 6ish should mean 3185)(this option is far more reliable) this will give you a basic idea of whats inside and from there you can go to the trouble of having it opened up.

Opening it is always the definitive way but those will give you pretty good idea before you start to open up the watches case.

When the calibre 3186 went in is that the same time that the clasp became the same as the daytona? Just trying to educate myself a little as I'm sure the whole forum has done at one time or another.

Daytona's current clasp came in around 2008 I think. So no.

I think no sooner than 2H 2007. I don't believe we saw them before the SS GMT-IIc which reached customers in Aug 2007.

The crown rotation test for the 3186 movement should be a positive test to determine weather or not you have a 3186 movement. there was a gear change from the 3185 to the 3186 movement, so if you rotate the crown one time and the 24 hr. hand jumps 8 times you should feel confident that you have a 3186 movement, after all gears are a positive .

The clasp was never the same as the one used on the Daytona, at least not on the Z or M.
