So many great ones, my pick is Clapton. Here's one you guys are going to laugh at me for: John Mayer. He's my favorte guitarist and he is up there with anyone mentioned so far skill-wise. Go to YouTube and check out his Where the Light Is Concert videos...specially the song "I Dont Trust Myself". I would post the link but I'm on my phone and don't know how.

Tom and Danny are [were] both phenomenal guitarists.

Junior Brown is another.

Zappa is very underappreciated as a guitarist.

In rock it would be Jeff Beck, Hendrix, Page, Duane Allman

But most are forgetting the great Jazz guitarists who many of the Rock guys copied like Wes Montgomery, Grant Green, Django, Kenny Burrell.

It's impossible to say "Greatest." By what criteria? Technical ablity? Influence? Songwriting skills?

Cobain was a HACK guitar player. Sloppy as sloppy can be. He did however, have a BIG influence on music as a whole.

Malmsteen has huge TECHNICAL ablity, but if you listen to a couple of his albums back to back, they are all the same. Blazing away in Harmonic Minor Scale.

Richards? Who cant pull off his deal? open "G" tuning, let her buck. BUT the man has written more great songs than just about anyone.

So who's better?

I have to give credit to Hendrix and Van Halen. Both were doing things with a guitar that were unheard of at the time. If you listen to Hendrix today his stuff is not that technical, however his influence on other guitarists can't be denied. (Eddie's stuff is still pretty complex even in the 30 plus years since "erruption.")
