Icon20 2 new subs for gifts ...

Hi gents and ladies ,
Lately i've been thinking about buying 2 new Subs for my God sons , at present they are only 10 and 12 years old and wish to give them for their 18th birthdays.
Serious question, would they be ok in storage for the next 6 years and 8 years respectively ?
My own Daytona hasn't seen the light of day for a while now but just wondered if it would be ok
Also went to my AD where i have purchased before and they are quite happy to take a deposit now and pay on arrival but NO discount at all .
They would however honour the price at point of deposit thus avoiding the extra 2.5% VAT rise in January.
Good deal do we think ?? all thoughts appreciated ,
Thanks ..

I don't think so you should get £300 - £500 off a sub anyway

Why not just buy the Submariners when they are closer to the age of 18? It seems a little silly to tie up all that money for no reason if you are not planning to wear either of them. Since the new ceramic Sub was just released, there is also a high probability that, if you wait to purchase, you will be able to get a discount in the future.

Buy 'em for yourself.......... then when they each turn 18, have it serviced and pass it along..

Probably mean a lot more to them if it's your own watch the receive.....

I agree with Larry...For me it'll be about passing on a watch I loved and wore. Much more value that way.

Agree with both above....It's the sentimental value that counts most!

The same about of money in a savings account wouldnt do much over 6 years. I would consider buying them now and maybe even wearing them part time. I made a special note for my submariner specifying it will be given to my daughter when she is old enough to appreciate it. She's now 5 years old and I wear the watch maybe 2 days max a week.

If I where buying two simultaneously, I would hope the AD could flex at least slightly on the price.

Its very nice of you to do such a thing for your God sons.

Wow if you buy Rolexes for your God Son's I can only imagine what you must buy for your own children.

Very generous indeed!

I would definitely buy, wear and enjoy the pieces. Then hand them down. There will be so many potential stories you van tell along with it. You could also make an experience out of it. Perhaps get on a plane and go on an adventure to another country to buy them for example. A road trip down the west coast highway....... If I was handed down a watch with a great story it would mean that much more.

Like the story of Christopher walkens dads watch in pulp fiction. But not quite ; )

If you pay CASH, ask for at least 10% off for both of those watches. I know their are lots of AD would go for that because credit cards get charged 2-3%, and nothing beats cold cash!

You can get great deals on TRF. Subs are plenty and are easy to get. Most sellers on here are at 10-15% off list price anyway.

If money is not an issue, I say go for it. You can decide to wear it or not, it all up to you.

If you stash it away for 10-12 years, I thinks it may need a service by that time. I dont know because I am not experience in that area.

Another option is to use the same amount of money, buy GOLD. Gold will go up due to inflation. In 10-12 years, sell the gold, buy them the new models, you dont have to worry about the services.

As for myself, I have three boys. I bought them a seadweller 16600, a ceramic green dial SUB, and a GMT Master 2c. I put them away. Every year I take their birthday pictures and stash them with the watches. Its planned for their college graduation. Of course they dont know about this.

Actually, it was Bruce Willis' dad's watch that Christopher Walken delivered to a young Bruce Willis...but yes, I know what you mean!

Invest the money intended for the purchases for 6-8 years, then buy the watches with the proceeds.

agreed with this one too! that is exactly what i will be doing with my 16610LV. one day it will go to the first born

BUT - mr. Dalip, i can sort of see a small "problems" here.... to do that, you'd need to keep it/them long enough and not to call Dalip Express as often
(sorry, couldnt resist )

ask for consecutive serial nos. get the paperwork in each of their names. take some pics of the sale /shop etc . buying them and keeping them for all that time is a story in itself.

still trying to get my head around the idea of locking up those beauties for over half a decade.....maybe take them to an AD on their birthdays to purchase the watch then? and, unless you have a particularly strong attraction to the submariner that you want to pass on to them, maybe have them choose which Rolex they want?

I agree! If they don't want it at 18, keep it until last graduation... You are much more likely to appreciate such a present at 25 rather than at 18 imho... (i am 27 and just bought my first one)

Agreed! Or just wait and buy them newer models when they are closer to 18. Who knows what Rolex will offer in 6 - 8 years. If you invest the money you would have spent today on these watches, you should be able to cover any increases in the price of the Rolexes.
