Fair enough. In my own experience, bonuses were paid based on performance, not perceived need. I am not one to say that this is the only way it works, it's just the only way I've experienced it....

And that's exactly how it should be Chris mate but when you're working for little more than a 'One Man Band' (as opposed to a multi-national say) you'd be amazed how their tiny minds can work.

Just to further illustrate the pettiness of some bosses & in support of the OP's concern:

My boss borrowed his brothers TT Sub' to wear to our Christmas-Do because he didn't want "to be outdone" by me wearing my GMT IIc.


he then proceeded to fold his cuffs back so the borrowed watch was blatantly displayed the whole evening.


& incidentally my bonus was exactly 25% of last years.
(& trust me it had nothing to do with effort nor performance.)

It's never come up. My boss is a snazzy dresser and wears his watches on his wrist so they show. Mine is worn on my arm (like most people) and therefore is not normally seen by anyone since I wear long sleeves at work.

I agree that it *shouldn't* matter, but I suppose it could if you had the kind of superficial boss that doesn't like to be shown up by subordinates. I think my boss would actually be "impressed" since he obviously likes watches, but we talk about work at work; not watches.

I don't go to my boss to tell him about my Rolex, I don't care what my boss thinks about me wearing a Rolex if he should have ever noticed that I do, and if a bonus is not what I expected it to be, I'm sure it is not because I'm wearing a Rolex.

only very few people will talk to you without any (pre-)judgement about luxury items, watches, cars, whatever - so I try to keep the talk down. only if I see someone sporting a nice watch, and when the situation is discrete enough I might politely comment on it. maybe a small show & tell evolves, maybe not.

then again, I see zero chances for wages to be cut or low bonuses because someone wears XY or drives AB. not in a world where almost everything can be bought on credit, and paid for within years....

and then again, your *insert luxury item here* could have been a gift, bought from a bequest or be one.

I don't think it matters that the person in question is a person in authority of "us" at work...the issue resides that that person of authority is just a prick....I would be happy for whomever and however someone wanted to spend their spoils...everyone works hard for their money in one way or another and showing contempt is jealousy...

I have worked hard at my current position and my current boss...has just cut my hours to insert one of his cohorts and has shown favouritism over other staff members in the past....he likes to be in control and the only way he can control me is by affecting my pocket book...because he can't control my spirit and my thoughts....

My boss has a WG Rolex, among others. He knows and says himself "We are too poor to buy cheap".
As for my colleagues, they don't even try, since I mentionned to them that my daily driver P 911 is 22 years old and cost less to buy than their new Golf/SUV/whatever newish car. And I can talk them into the ground on the subject of spending: holidays/ iPhone/home cinema/big screenTV/new skis every season, none of which I have.

I understand where the OP is coming from. I wear my shirtsleeves down at work. There are a few people who know what I have but those I work closely with have no idea. They are a petty group, jealous of others and always complaining. It's a very negative environment. If you buy a new car it had better be because your old one fell apart from old age or else folks will be talking. If you buy something considered Luxury it's because you earn too much and you're stupid to spend money on such things. Everyone has opinions and none are afraid to share them. These people don't have lives or have fun. They live strictly to work for their kids or grandkids.

I wear my Omega SMP to work and leave the EXP II at home. I work with some people who are struggling financially and it just doesn't feel right to wear the Rolex at work.

If someone feels a compelling need to inform their boss or anyone for that matter what make of watch they're wearing then I'd suggest a different problem exists but it's with the person wearing the watch. As for the OP's question. Do you hide wear you live, what car you drive or where you vacation? If your boss is that petty then any of these could set him or her off. Think about doing your job while at work instead of if you should reveal your watch. Your boss will appreciate that far more than anything else.

The lower your income, the better grade of watch should be worn. By the time you replace lower quality watches, you would have spent enough money to buy a Rolex which will last several generations if properly maintained. I.E. Timex=expensive while Rolex=bargain.

Personally I've never just "told anyone" (my boss included) that I own Rolex.

They've either noticed it or just from general conversation know that I'm "into watches".


I'm glad that you obviously don't work for an a**hole but I can't see how that leads you to the conclusion that the two points above are mutually exclusive.

I went to my boss to see which local AD he recommended, and told him what I was looking for...his statement: "It's about time you bought a real watch".

I feel the same way. Part of it has to do with my outlook on life. I think that just about all of it is FANTASTIC, and I feel as if I am on vacation almost every day.

If the boss does notice and is surprised that you have made such a big purchase then it might be a good thing.

Perhaps your purchase could signal confidence in your abilities and even enhance your prospects for promotion and a pay rise if somehow the image you project moves further towards a perception of competence and ability among those with influence than it did before you bought the piece.

I don't really want to get into it, but from my experience it is not going to help you (at all) if your boss knows you have a Rolex(s) and drive a sick luxury car. It could create jealousy. I just don't think anything positive comes out of it unless you're good friends with your boss, and he is a WIS, and you're already extremely happy with your compensation.

1st meeting at the office after I bought my watch my boss' boss pulled my arm as I was talking and yells out "what is that... a bolex... rolles... Cause if it's a Rolex we are paying you guys too much money!" He wore a TT Sub and my boss wore a YG Day-Date so my responce was "No, mine is the cheap SS version.... When I can afford one with gold is when I'll be making too much money!"

We all had a good laugh!
