Looking to buy a 14060M - what to look for/included?

Looking to buy a new 14060M COSC, wondering what is included and what to look out for?

1. Serial number - i understand these are 'random', have seen ones with a G and Y or Z, does anyone know what the latest S/N range is, ones with a 'G' ?

2. Spacing between 1000ft = 300m, whats the norm, space or no space after '=' sign

3. What is the correct strap and link stamp code?

4. Clasp, should have finger indent, right?

5. Crown, triple with 3 raised dots under Rolex logo

6. Rehaut has S/N

7. Model and S/N between lugs - do AD's take the bracelet off if asked?

8. What's included with the watch as standard? (ie. S/N card, booklet etc..) does it come with any tools to remove bracelet and links?

9. Warranty period... - i assume its international?

Did I miss anything?

you say you are buying a new Rolex, are you planning on getting this from an AD? if you are you ready don't need to worry about all that stuff, what you could do is tell the AD you would like a non display watch, that has only been ordered in for you or they may have an unopenned one in the safe, buying from an AD is the best way to have piece of mind.

X2. And no matter whats the case stamp you will get the same two year warranty if bought new.All you can tell from these IMHO overrated Internet serial dates is when a case was approximately stamped. Now how old the movement is in the case well only Rolex knows that one.And makes no difference if it X,Y,Z or any other letters numbers. As any will all in most case out last there owners just with a bit of normal routine service. The most important bit is the watch and warranty card the rest is just purely packaging.

I'm glad that you decided to get one of the last of the classic Rolex watches..

Subs are favorites...

Here is my perspective and a couple of bullets...

. The latest serial numbers are completely random. However, G has been released along with the randoms and V is still in the mix too. I think it very likely that there may be M's still on the shelf as well.

. All 14060M watches come with the 93150 bracelet and 501B end-links.. There is no "correct" code stamp although I think the latest may be RS.

. No, the sales staff will not likely take the bracelet off a new watch so you "can-have-a-look", and there is no reason for you to ask..

. The rest of the stuff you ask are part of the watch.. Any new one from an AD will be pretty standard..

. I'm going to refrain from saying what's included as "standard" because there really isn't any such thing... The watch comes in a tiny plastic coffin with the red hang tag, and then the Dealer/Distributor adds everything else.. Look through all of it and decide for yourself it you think you have the stuff you want to see....

thanks guys.

hi Larry, thanks for the addition information.

i really like the no-date 14060M, and agree its one of the last classic subs. i was hunting for a long time for mint 14060M non-COSC with a flat S but couldn't find one with complete papers and box. then i thought that it would be nice to buy new so i am the first owner. and as there are no NOS 14060 non COSC's around (that i could find) i have opted for the COSC version. i initially wasn't sure about the rehaut ROLEXROLEX.. but now think its a good feature as it has the S/N, which would be harder for fraudsters to copy/imitate.

re serials, are you saying that there are M, V & G serials before they went totally random?

what does "RS" standard for btw? (in your sentence above: "There is no "correct" code stamp although I think the latest may be RS.")

Yes... There are M, V, and G serials as the latest... It appears though that the G is being manufactured along-side the randoms; possibly V as well, so you really can't qualify the statement by adding ?before they went totally random", although is is clear that randoms are the future...

The RS clasp code is generally accepted as being a 2010 clasp code stamp. You asked about "strap and link stamp code." Apparently you only meant the stamped part number --- there is this little date code there too..

While I'm on the soap box.. You say that you looked for a "mint 14060M non-COSC and flat S", but passed because it didn't have "complete papers and box".
.... Generally when you are looking for a particular model, condition is paramount- papers take a back-seat, and for a modern reference, a box shouldn't even be on the plate... Passing by a mint watch with the features you want only gets more difficult over time.....

i think there are R serials too. and yes it seems that G serials may be the last before going to randoms. in any case i personally like the non-random numbers

i assume the random numbers are for security reasons to deter fraudsters?

The R serials were the very first letter serial and used in ~1987, so if you see a recent model with R, it is simply a random set of numbers..

I believe that Rolex has gone to randoms because they have almost run through the entire alphabet. That and too many buyers seem to think that one serial number is "fresher" than another - like a loaf of bread; so they possibly got tired of buyers refusing a purchase because they didn't think the serial was "new enough"...

On the other hand, they may not really care... With the new system, they could go another century without needing to devise another "new" serial number method...

thanks larry

update: i bought a new random S/N 14060M COSC from an AD. very happy with it. looked at up to 10 or so AD's and found one that had no gap in dial with old style typeface. noticed some of the G serials especially and a few randoms had a more clinical typeface printing on the dial which lacked the more traditional serif details.

whilst i was at it, i went back to the store 2 days later and also bought a Sinn U2. awesome watch too

em, is there a waiting in HK?

well there is at least 7-9 brand new ones sitting in AD's in singapore. a few of them said it was going to be 'discontinued'. grab a flight and have a holiday as well.

I asked for several of ADs here, but all the same answer! you know, hong kong is tax-free, and I also email for quotation to StarHill gallery Kuala Lumpor, there's also tax-free for watches & jewelry, the answer is... waiting list.

yes i know, i called about 4 (of probably the largest) AD's in KL when i was also in malaysia. they were all out and had to order them in.

singapore pricing is v competitive, also you can claim the GST when you fly out at the airport.

As long as you're buying from an AD, don't worry.

hunz, if you are buying from an AD, try to get them to throw in a transport case. The watches are shipped in a transport case to an AD so if you can work them to get you one it would be sweet to have. Also check the crystal to make sure there is no scratches. I bought a new 14060M last Oct and had to replace the crystal because there was a scratch which i didnt notice until i brought it to Rolex to break a chain.

hi, i already bought it! - re transport case, you mean the clear plastic case with styrofoam? - i saw it and asked and the AD threw it in. i didn't think it was a big deal as these are thrown away by the AD? or do they recycle or pay for them? - in any case its very useful

i did check the crystal but couldn't see any scratches. i thought the 14060M had the rolex logo on the crystal, but i couldn't find it. is it on other models?

It's not very easy to spot, took me a while to do that, it's around the same place where Swiss Made is written.

That's right, the clear plastic case with styrofoam is the tranport case. I believe those cases go back to Rolex so they can be reused for the next time when Rolex ship watches to the AD. Very useful if you need to secure your watch for traveling.

The logo on the crystal is hard to locate unless you are using a loupe magnifier and at a certain angle, you wont see it. Just keep looking at the 6 oclock position.

Thanks guys. The lighting wasn't the best in the store and the loupe they gave me was probably only 2X magnification. i just took it to a sunny spot and used my 4X loupe. initially i couldn't see it b/c the 6 o'clock white marker occluded/masked the white Rolex logo dotted etching. It was only till I rolled the watch on an angle that it stood out against the black dial that I could see it (as stated by Superb). Thank you all guys

Ally, yes I got 15% off retail after a bit of research and talking to various AD's - but this is in singapore, not the UK

Ah, didn't know they returned them to Rolex. and yes very handy when traveling/storage. Thanks also for the tip on spotting the logo in crystal
