Vintage Tudor question

I am considering hunting for a vintage Tudor Submariner. Is the quality on-par with Rolex with regards to the dial, case, etc? I understand they used ETA movements in their watches...are they COSC?

Are Tudor Submariner models faked/ franken'd/ replicated or is it rare?

Any information about the Submariner models would be appreciated.

With regards to being on par with rolex I would yes especially prior to 1990. The case, bracelet, crown, crystal, cyclops and caseback are identical. In the past Tudors were assembled in Rolex factories. Some will argue the dials were less, simply because many of the vintage Tudors their dials aged roughly over the years, particularly the rose dial Tudor subs. But this may add to the value if you can find one with a mint dial as they seem difficult to come by. The ETA movements are proven horses and Rolex chose the top grade ETA movement available so no worries about that, plus a lot of watchmakers are familiar with servicing it.

I recently purchased my first Tudor Sub and I am happy with it. The models I tend to love are the Snowflake, Lolipop, Rose dial and of course the big crown 7924, simply because they have a very unique look that differ from Rolex watches.


As far as being faked, franken or what have you I would say YES. Be smart and buy with the SAME precautions as you would with a vintage Rolex.

Tudors are faked quite a lot so be careful what source you buy from. Are you looking at a particular model?

The quality is great and they offer something different to a Rolex

As stated above, with many vintage Tudors the only difference is the movement. Tudor uses the highest chronometer grade ETA movements, although they are not tested and thus, certified.
And according to Tudor's CEO they have been and continue to be made in the same facility and assembled by the same employees as Rolex.

Many fakes out there, so be careful.

Lollipops are very cool, as seen in Martin's pic. Tudor Sub anomalies like lollipos and snowflakes make them even more addicting.

you have to REALLY be careful of fakes.

they are everywhere. before buying, look at the model, the serial and the movement cal and do your homework to make sure it makes sense.

there is one case number 737738 that is a rampant fake 7016/0. its a pretty good forgery and i would bet you will find a few.

just remember, if its 30 years old and looks new... it likely is new. i am looking for one as well, and i only would consider a beat up one at this point.

IMO the Tudor 7928's are a real peach.

Classic styling, strong and reliable 390 movement and (relatively) affordable.

It's one for show and one for go for me

Tudors are brilliant watches and on the 1950's, 60's and 70's Subs and Chronos you are getting something equally rare and interesting as with Rolex.

As for fakes, I think the main problem is that no one researched Tudors back when they started making fakes 10 years ago. So now a lot of old scans and articles are deemed gospel. ;-) (Like the cal 390 vs 1030 discussion)
