1 other thing.... not directly to the question of the 2ndary market but...

when you walk out of the AD with TT or all gold watch you take a huge hit in price.

vs SS which holds its value extremely well... this is true for all high end watches.

The price on a Precious metal Rolex is way overblown and like a car purchase, u lose thousands as soon as u r the new owner. Also, SS is harder than precious metals so won't accumulate as much wear and tear as quickly and of douse is more affordable. But, I do love the TT and solid gold or platinum models. Her we are, dissing the TT and solid gold models while so many people in this world have plated gold watches. Go figure.

Easy solution. Rolex should come out with SS/WG two-tones .

Actually the oldest person I know who wears a Rolex has a TT blue sub!

And I agree, the number of scratches that my wife gets on the gold portion of her bracelet is crazy compared to SS.

Gold/ss is better than ss in any watch--costs more, looks better in an Oyster Perpetual (see my avatar) and has better resale value. Any solid gold-containing watch has higher resale value and is in greater demand these days than ss. And gold is timeless--it is never out of style.

Sorry guys, that was a stupid thing to say.

Thought a bit of banter might be fun, but can see I just come across offensive.

I love this site, and thought it was about time to join in the debate, but backfired a bit.

I kinda like tt for the Datejust jubilee (as seen above), but the only sport Rolex that can pull it off is the Root Beer IMHO. However I prefer SS.

Love that DJ, Bob!

I have both SS GMTIIc and TTDJ and wear either, depending on my mood and level of dress. Perhaps one day I will get the courage to sink some $$$ into a solid gold/plat piece, but for now I love both of these styles! There are so many watches that I say I dislike at first, but then, once I put one on my wrist, I MUST HAVE IT!

When I was a young man, then in Singapore, the Rolex Datejust TT was the most popular model and it was nicknamed 'Rolex Star', while the Rolex President Day-Date was nicknamed 'Rolex King' and the basic model, reference 6694, was nicknamed 'Baby Rolex'.

Generally, business and professional people went for the 'Rolex King', while bus and taxi-drivers preferred the 'Baby Rolex'. Those in between the lots chose the 'Rolex Star'. As such, the TT was the top-seller in Singapore, then.

I believe that "full gold" line came from a silly column in the online mag Ask Men. The writers (seem to be several) make strong, sometimes contradictory statements. I get the impression that it's a young guys kind of site.

I believe that the drop occurs because the watches command the higher price. Somebody is buying every one, obviously, and at the "high" price. Once the watches enter the pre-owned market, there are so many that it overwhelms the market. The rules of supply and demand rule. It's entirely possible that the secondary market has drifted more towards ss, but if you put an extra million ss models out there, the prices will drop.

I also believe that tt DJ's have been the biggest seller that Rolex has produced, for 50 years. There are millions out there.

I was never all that interested in a DD but picked up a 60's 14k DJ to wear on a strap. Nice watch and it has held up nicely.

I just traded 2004 tt sub., black for a new white face ss Daytona. I was given $5000 trade in value so obviously I wore the watch for nothing. The tt black sub is a classic and still a popular look. I also have a ceramic GMT and so I no longer have a tt watch. I will probably own either the original LV sub next or the pre ceramic style blue tt sub next to round off my little collection. I agree that stainless is nicer for the Daytona then tt or solid gold. To me the white gold looks like steel. If you put a Arabic numeral face on ss Daytona it looks identical to the white gold.

Bought this one for a change from time to time. I have the jubillee bracelet but the leather is a little less blingy and I wear it like this more often. My main choice is ss but it's a nice change.

I wouldn't say that TT Rolexes are "unwanted'' in the secondary market but yes, demand is less than for S/S Rolexes. But I don't think demand is significantly less though.

I do agree with other members that it would be vastly unfair to say that the only reason people buy TT is because they cannot afford the full gold model.

However I would say that some, possibly most but not necessarily all, people who buy those diamond encrusted models have more money than sense.

Particularly those ones that are entirely covered with diamonds, or the Submariner with a diamond bezel that the weightlifting chappie in the canary costume had in that YouTube video.

Very glad TT isn't as popular as SS because TT are by far my favorite type of Rolex watches--I think they are beautiful and quintessentially Rolex--and there will always be deals to be had on them.

Until, of course, the rest of the world gets better taste and realizes the aesthetic pleasure of gold and silver combined!

i'm 32 and I love the TT's... That doesn't make me look older does it?

it doesn't matter anyway because I buy my watches for myself...
