To the op, I am on the hunt for 2007 year rolex for my now 4 year old son. I have the same issue was thinking the nodate sub, but could also go seadweller late z early M. The only diffrence is I plan to wear it untill I gift it to him in approx 20 years.
If sub -c was an option in 2007 that would be the one and that gets my vote for ur son.

He will no doubt inherit my existing collection of watches (see below) but I really like the idea of his first watch being something more symbolic i.e. his very own, unworn by Dad, 18 years old but BNIB and.... Not just one of my old watches.

Something says I should buy him the 14060M as it seems more retro than the Sub C and I generally prefer the cleaner look, but I just cant make my mind up.

My existing collection is:

Seamaster Aqua Terra
Seamaster PO
Speedmaster Moonphase
PAM 329
Milgauss GV
116610 LV
116710 LN

Let me know your thoughts!

that sounds like an amazing idea!!!

i would without a doubt get the 14060m. it is timeless and will remain so.
the movements are identical (minus a spring) and the watch will be solidly rooted in the proper era vs the ceramic movement that is ever evolving at this time.

and if he should cherish one of your personal watches more, so be it, hell have a nice piece of watch lore as well.

really wonderful thoughtful memento.

Your son is very unlikely to be interested in watches: most people are not even slightly.

Invest the money. In 18 years it'll be worth more than an 18 year old mass-produced watch, and he can then spend it on what he actually wants.

Sub 14060M would be my choice. Classic appearance, rich history...and, in sort of way, perfect watch for younger person.

Ever seen the ancient carvings of Gods wearing watches?

That was 5000 years ago!

How about....

Investing the money for him that you'd spend on a Rolex mate? 18 is too young to appreciate it anyway...I speak from experience. Give it to him on a milestone like university graduation...marriage...etc. They are too full of piss and vinegar at that age to fully "get it". Just my thoughts. All the best, Mark

Agree with above.

I bought my SD the hard way i.e. worked for the money myself. I'm not a big fan of rolex's for 18th\ 21st, etc. I know a guy who had everything handed to him on a plate & he used to say his dad was this & his dad was that everytime he didn't get a expensive birthday\ xmas present.

Put the money away for your son's education - once he graduates - he can buy "YOU" a watch

I love the idea! I'm 18 myself and just bought myself a birth year submariner 14060. It would have been awesome if it was brand new with the papers in my name. I would go for the 14060M as it is more of a "classic" watch and aluminum bezels will be unavailable in the new market when your son is 18. I will be buying my son a submariner when he is born as well (in the DISTANT future lol)

WIN-WIN!!!!

+1. And if you do so, get a Sub-C LN. It's a modern watch that will not be too old-fashioned (technical-wise) in 2029 as a 14060M would be -- no offense to 14060M owners.

Im a little confused. Are we talking about a purchase you are going to make in 18 years or something we are going to buy now. If now I would buy him a TT ceramic sub. Gold will probably be at 5k an ounce in 18 years and will definately be back in fashion.

Leave it until he's 17 and a half before you buy one. My AD told me that at Basel 2029 Rolex are bringing out the Mars Dweller. He might like that one

I dunno, I think it's a good idea, god knows how much these things will cost in 18 years. I guarantee it will be a sought after classic.

We are all different, I think I would of treasured it if my dad gave it to me when I was 18. I read a post from GMT-Master(Chris) the other day that all he wanted on his 18th was a Rolex - are you telling me this guy didn't appreciate it.

When I turned 18 my dad gave me a Tudor Advisor that he purchased in Holland while he was in the Navy. To this day, it was the most meaningful gift I've ever received. So I vote for the hand-me-down.

he's not necessarily going to wear it because he is interested in watches,

he could be wearing it because it came from his father who cares about him.

You want to buy a watch now and give it to him in 18 years?

I'm sorry but if my father gave me an 18 year old watch on my 18th birthday, I'd say thanks and throw it in my sock drawer and probably forget about it. Now, if my father gave me a 40 year old watch on my 40th birthday, I would be much more grateful because I am much more mature than when I was 18

Buy your son a new watch when he turns 18.

Thing is, in eighteen years time the watch will be desperate for a service and so will have to go in to Rolex and have the 'newness' serviced away, if you get what I mean. Cool idea, but a watch that needs servicing before wearing doesn't seem new to me.

If you are intent on doing this I would say 116610 since it is a current model and the idea is to give him a watch from his birth year.
The other thing would be to invest the amount of a subc until his 18th then go with him to buy one if you think it is still appropriate.
Congrats on the son!
Cheers!

How about an iPhone? Young people will have little to no desire to wear mechanical wrist watches in 20yrs.

Because the comment that 14060 might be a while there in stock. Did you think Rolex discontinue it? I have no news that ...
That's a nice watch ... classic ... elegant ..
If not sport could be an Air King or a 116200...

Secondly, you assume that your son will share your interest in first of all material matters, secondly automatic watches per se, and thirdly your passion for Rolex. Remember, this is YOUR passion/dream, not his.

A lot can/will happen in almost 20 years.

If you twist my arm, I'd say get a SubC black. It is the ultimate cannot-go-wrong-choice.
I could not agree more. If he somehow IS into mechanical wristwatches, he'll value your worn watches more IMO.

I think that it would be a lot better for him to get one of your Rolex's. My only Rolex is from my Grandfather, and i wouldn't trade it for anything. The fact that it was from my Grandfather is what makes it so valuable.

I would much rather wear a prized watch that my dad wore and cherished for years than a brand new watch put away for 18 years. My two cents...
