Would you punt on a 168000?

Hi guys, am in a dilema about wheteher I should get a 168000 or not. I believe the only atrractive thing that touches me about owning a 168000 is it's supposed rarity(the extra zero in the serial number is about all that it has to tout) though it doesn't really score on my "beauty at first sight test" neither does it have any visually stimulating attributes that would differentiate it from the rest of the subs. Still thinking about adding this one as a wild card gamble and to use roughly but don't really have my heart in it and am torn between this or saving up for a better looking model that would have my heart in it. A unique case of the heart is not where the mind is.

Is there a similar more vintage model that is considered rare just because it has a unique serial number with the other attributes hardly changed?(change is steel quality doesn't really qualify). What would your advice be?

If your heart isn't into it, then don't bother trying to talk yourself into it.

Only buy it if you really want it. If you are buying to speculate on future value you are buying for wrong reason IMHO. Don't buy watches for money reasons or even rarity but buy purely because you love them!

If you had found a NOS 1 reasonable maybe but I think its a dog in the market personally. Im sure there are some collectors out there that want it to add to there vast collection of every reff # Submariner collection but my real world experience on anything other than MINT is dealers I see just label it Sub date to sell them. If you like it as a watch why not get a 16610 ?

I say consider going older (5513 or 1680) or if you want to bang it around and get it wet - go newer (16610 or 14060). I had and just sold a 14060 A and loved it - now have a 5513 and love it - for different reasons. I don't need or want a date on my weekend watch...

Go for it! My dad bought his 168000 in 1988, sold it in 1991. Regrets it everyday.

Hmmm, I had it, but after awhile, I realized it's basically a Sub (16610) with a third "0" in it's serial... It wasn't an exciting watch for long, and paying a premium for it wasn't so great either, so I sold it. Maybe they will become valuable at some point, but I'm not a watch collector, but a watch user.

The sub is great, but a 168000 is to me, just that, another sub.
