Hi,

The more I read and see pictures on here, the more I am thinking of buying a Rolex for keeps.
What would be a good one to start my long life addiction?

Sturdy movement, some complications would be nice, water proof, not too expensive.
I like the newer ones a lot but I'm into older ones as well.

Besides telling hours, minutes and seconds, you really only need one "complication": The date function

So if I were you, I'd go for the SS Sub Date. An all-time classic that you will NEVER be tired of!

My vote would be to go with the older style GMT II (16710). If you want you can eventually swap out the bezels and have yourself a different watch. So its is basically like having three different watches in one. You can interchange between the blue/red, black/black and black/red bezels and that is always a great feature to have and is something worth considering.

You cannot go wrong with all the other sports model though. Because in the end, they each have a distinction about them that sets them apart from all the others. It depends on which of the features will be most useful to you or which you would prefer to have. Like if you need a second time zone, a time-lapse feature, or a chronograph etc.

I know I'm in the minority here but I would recommend a DateJust. The variety of bracelets and dials offer numerous choices and it's just as rugged as any of the Rolexes. IMO it's also a bit dressier when needed.

I think a DJ is a great choice, along with a Sub date or non-date. Either is a great way to start a collection as they are quite iconic Rolex pieces. If money permits, allow me to recommend a Sub Date. Easily the quintessencial sport Rolex, it's clean, classic and elegant. Everything you need in a rugged watch, nothing you don't.

Sigh, so many great looking watches, can't I have em all?

Gonna think it over for awhile, second time zone would be nice but is not essential.
I like the black bezels on SD and Submariner, the one in the middle that Mike posted is to die for!
GMT with possibility of changing the bezel is very interesting.
Any rough price indications on these?
Pre owned in good condition with box and papers.
Think I will visit an AD in the Netherlands I've been to before, to have a look feel at them.

I started with a nice Datejust as it is a very versatile watch. A Sub/ SD is great but in my opinion does not fit with a suit or on the golf course. I think everyone eventually needs a Sub, but if you can only have one I would start with a Datejust. The new lumed stick marker DJ's look a little sportier and would be one you may consider looking at.

For your very FIRST Rolex, I'd go with either one of these two - SS if you like all steel....or TT if you like that kinda stuff!!

Yeah, the black one is really nice, the blue one too but without the gold, seems misplaced to me but that might change after trying one

I have worn Rolex before but only vintage ones and not my own like a very old Sea Dweller, Submariner, President and a couple of DD's, back then I did not like em very much but as with many watches they grow on you.
