New Vintage Purchase

I am a newbie and finally was impulsed enough to make my first purchase. I thought I was buying a 1957 Rolex Date but ended up getting a Model 1603 Datejust that I think was from the early 70's. I just got it and had a local dealer take a look at it and thought it looked great. I paid $3250 for it with a NATO strap, I think the one I got was listed as a more expensive watch then the one I ordered. Not sure if it is just buyers remorse but I feel I over paid. I would appreciate any feedback, insight or help. Thanks!

Looks good, not sure about latest prices on these but I would say just enjoy it now that you've already paid:).

Great looking watch. If you like it then don't worry about the price and enjoy it.
I think it looks great!

Since you wanted to know $3250 is VERY high in my book for a 1603. I just bought a late 60's 1603 with all original boxes and documents for under $1500 with a jubilee. I see 1603's for $1500-2000 pretty frequently.

PM me if you want some feedback from me on that price.

is it a slow set ? it should be.

the bracelet that should be on that watch i think should be a 62510H. they can be had for 230$ on ebay.

matt pretty much summed up my thoughts on that price. that dealer who sold it to you for that price should have:
1. given you genuine a rolex bracelet.
2. had it totally overhauled by rolex.

even if he had done this, the price is sky-high

Yes it was on gilt, weak and impulsive moment. I got sent the wrong one anyway. I figured it was overpriced, not to happy about the whole thing. Nice looking watch though.

on the bright side, a new datejust is $6k, so at least you got a great watch for the money. in the future, search the models on these forums and ebay to get a value range. you could also go have a chat with the guy you got it from to see if you could add a bit of cash for a better model. these things happen; i am sure i got ripped on the grade and color of my wife's engagement ring too. harry

If you received the wrong one then that's a great way of getting your money back and find a better deal elsewhere. The price you paid would've gotten you a much newer watch with bracelet or even one of the sports models. Perhaps an Explorer I. Check the FOR SALE section of the forum.

If ths isn't the one you paid for I would definitely look into get my money back, unless you are happy with this one.

jmg, if you can reverse this deal, you really should. if it wasnt a gift from my wife, i would happily sell you my 1601/1603 for 50% of what you have paid (1650), and my watch has a blue dial and a jubilee band. where in the US are you ? Harry

Without knowing more, that's a bit high. However, if you love the watch, keep in mind that spreading the "extra" that you may have paid over 20-40 years of use makes the money insignificant. Same goes for savings. If you got a super bargain on a watch that you aren't very fond of, the savings won't make you enjoy wearing the watch.
