Could someone please help me ID this old Tudor submariner watch, I have seen several photos that looked similar, but not exactly the same.

My Grandfather gave it to me many years ago. He was issued it in the early 60’s by the US Navy. The serial number begins with 400.

What kind of service should I have done to it before passing it on to my son?

That's a very nice Tudor Sub.

Just get the movement serviced.

Do NOT change the dial, hands, bezel (including insert and dot). I would also retain the original domed crystal. It would add value as well as keep that vintage look.

I would also recommend not polishing the case. Those scratches are part of that watches history - if only they could talk.

Also does it have numbers engraved on the outside of the caseback?

A very nice piece to hand down.

The only numbers on the case is the 6 digit serial #, the other side says stainless steel

I would get it cleaned, oiled, adjusted by a competent watchmaker in your area....I would get the crystal polished and replace the bezel insert (carefully, as I would keep the original), and I would look for an oyster bracelet....

Then, when my kids want it they can take it off my dead wrist.....as I'm sure they won't honor my request to toss it in the box with me...

Have the inside serviced by a reputable watchmaker (not RSC). I personally would keep everything original and leave the insert alone as I think it adds a nice dimension to the watch. However, if your son can’t stand the old bezel take Tools advice and make sure you get the original back when they make the change. I am not sure about the bracelet but I think you want a 93150 with 380 end links (double check that).

I tried using toothpaste to polish my acrylic and it worked wonders! Try it out, just make sure you use a damp cloth and go light on the toothpaste.

Has the watch been in for service in the past? Looks as if the crown may have been changed during last servicing.
