I have to agree, and I'm sorry to sound so stuffy. If a watch is worn, a sports watch wouldn't be appropriate. If anything, I'd be inclined toward a Cellini Prince, Patek with plain dial and Roman markers on leather... or Datejust with fluted bezel.....

Going to the casino in a tux, I would say a Sub would be nice.

Going to Windsor in a tux, then its a big no no!

I would wear a small thin watch on a strap, or nothing at all.
You can show your style with the cufflinks.

If it was me no watch. I don't even wear my PP's with a Tux. Enjoy the evening and if you get a chance take a walk by the river and admire the view by night, a very pleasant and memorable evening you will have.

Did not see how big this affair is but if there is a very large amount of people there (like I suspect) the past post of seeing a bit of everything (including fakes I would suspect) will likely be spot on.

Unless you’re the guest speaker or a target of the paparazzi, not likely anyone will pay attention to your watch, cuff links, etc. Enjoy yourself!

When is this event? Would be fun if the OP, or any other TRF member attending, would post an updated after the event. If attendee/s could manage to pace themselves on spirits maybe even a list of watches/models they saw…..I’m betting it will not be 0.

When I went there in 1976, as tourist visiting the museum in the castle, I was wearing my steel with WG bezel Datejust and JB bracelet . As far as I remember nobody complaint

Seriously now, to my opinion, and trust me, I have been in many such events, and still do, you need no watch at all !

If you really WANT to wear one, you need to wear a black leather strap, with a PP, VC, a Corum or similar in YG or WG. Simple and classy and most of all with NO DATE and if possible without hour markers. Despite the fact that I am a fanatic with Subs, GMTs' and all sport watches, NO WAY you should wear such a watch in an event like this with a black tie.

Excuse me for saying that, but if you do, you will "look" very American. Europeans meet such events with high class and low profile.

I'm not sure I would worry as much as some have led you to think. The event is a charity event, not a royal event. It happens to be at Windsor Castle. Maybe a royal will be in attendance, maybe not.
If the future King of Canada (oh and the rest of the British Commonwealth) can wear a (gasp) quartz omega dive watch then I see absolutely nothing wrong, crass, vulgar, etc. with a SS sub.
True the "old" etiquette would suggest no watch, but the rules over time seem to have been changed with the Royal family leading the way. So if the Prince does it, it is "officially" acceptable.
Either way have fun, and don't challenge anyone to a duel. (the swords on the walls, although real, are NOT meant to be used)

No brainer... SS Sub with your suit. Sharp and Cool. I am English and work for a certain British menswear/womenswear designer who is a "Sir"...I hope that is some professional advice for you. Just whatever you do don't wear a pre-tied bow tie to the evening. not a good look..

Thanks for all of the feedback. I do appreciate it. In no particular order...yes, it is a "Royal Family Charity" event and a "royal" will be there...it could be Will and Kate or Charles and Camilla...it could also be Fergie's second cousin, twice removed. They have promised an "audience" with said royal and a picture. I will post if at all possible. The Emergency on rubber wasn't really an option, it is just one of the three watches I have...although aren't Will and Harry pilots? They might appreciate it. No, it isn't a clip-on or pre-tied tie, I do it myself. I do like the idea of the Cal watch...it ticks several suggestions (like a new watch). However, the only other watch I want to get is a GMT Pepsi, so a new "real" watch isn't really an option. We are going with a couple of locals, so I may check with them on decorum and see if a watch will cause an international incident. I don't want to be "The Ugly American" (not that a watch could cause that), but didn't we fight a war a couple of hundred years ago because we don't care what "they" think???...but I digress. Thanks again and I'll keep you posted.

Really? That has to be one of the dumbest things I have ever heard. You do realize you are talking about whether to wear a watch or not wear a watch? It's not freaking life or death. As a proud American and someone who served in the US military, I will be sure to remember that the world hates me because I may wear a watch with a tux. I will leave it at that since I like TRF and don't feel the need to get banned for what I really want to say.

The sub, albeit a classic, is a sport watch, not a formal watch. I usually don't worry too much about it but I have not been to a formal event at Windsor Castle, yet. Ultra formal, a sport watch would be inappropriate. Agree with getting a formal appearing cheapo quartz watch if you must wear one. This is a good opportunity to pick up a nice formal watch. Hey, you'll always ave the memory and the reminder. "I wore this watch to Windsor Castle!" How about an omega constellation?
