LED or LCD and Brand...

Guys sold my house as I am going through a divorce. Need input on 50" or greater tv. They have so many damn models and styles nowadays I don't know where to start. I had two 52" LCD's, but I am leaving them in the house to sweeten the sell. I have to buy some new tv's and thought maybe you guys could share on your what you own or what you should have gotten.

Thinking LED and have owned Sony and Samsung. I have to admit Samsung has always impressed me with their product and especially their new phones. I think their picture is the best on the market generally speaking.

I still like plasma, and there are some FANTASTIC deals to be had b/c most view it as a dead technology. But between your 2 choices above, I'd go LED as LCD on its own w/ no LED backlighting is a dying technology too :)

Sony (expensive, but nice), Samsung, LG (both solid, reasonably priced), and Panasonic (currently own, think its slightly better quality than Smsg/LG), are good brands.

I've recently bought one of the new Samsung 3D LED TV's and it's amazing. Definitely recommend it and it cant be more than a cm deep Looks very cool too

I'm still a Pioneer Elite/Kuro Plasma fan. They're still available, and awesome. I paid way too much for mine, and don't regret a single penny spent on it.
That being said, Sharp released a new LED "Elite" line, now that they own the rights to the name. Reviews of this "elite" $5500-$8000 tv are not good. It's a shame.
Look into OLED tech. It's coming for 2012, but it's not going to be cheap.
But as a newly single guy, your whole place is your man cave, so you're worth it.

There are a lot of good LED sets out there, but mostly the picture is dependent upon how well set up and calibrated it is for the viewing area. The only thing I've noticed in the Samsung sets that family members have is that there seems to be a lot of light bleed in the corners on dark or black screens. Samsung owners have called this the "flashlight" effect or something. Not all seem to have it, tho. The ones I've seen are very distracting in a dark room on dark material. Have not noticed this on the higher end Sony LED's. All in all, I prefer the look of the Sony LED when it is calibrated properly and think it has a more filmlike image.

The new Sharp LED was the highest rated by consumer reports. The top brands were sharp samsung and lg. All of out TVs are Sony Bravias.

Personally I think plasma the way to go, especially for sports. I have an 8 series 58" Samsung and love it.

Samsung LED D7000 or D8000 same spec just D7000 has a clear surround the 8000 has a silver awesome TV !

I have the 46" they do go up to 55" and 60" I may be in the minority but I'm not a fan of the super huge TV's so have the 46" version and love it :-)

Another vote for Samsung LED.... the picture quality is nothing short of amazing.

I am waiting for my prehistoric DLP to die so I can upgrade.

samsung led, I currently have a 55" in the living room and 46" in the bedroom. The newer line is even nicer especially the borderless models!

I have the Samsung LED 8000 series and really like it. Phenomenal picture overall. My only complaint is the presence of light bleed when the scene is dark in a movie, etc. It is a bit annoying and is my one and only complaint.

I have observed some light bleed on dark screens. This is my only complaint.

You guys helped me make a decision to get a Led, I got sucked into a DLP Samsung 50' about 5 years ago ,and man is it a POS, I've changed the light bulb twice in it, those bulbs aren't cheap

An LED TV is still an LCD. The difference is the backlight method (LED vs. CCFL (fluorescent)). Since pixels on an LCD do not generate their own light, they basically need a light source behind them. That can be provided by a CCFL or LED. LED can be just a replacement of the CCFL, edge lit (coming from the edges) or local dimming (per array or pixel group). This is not to be confused with an OLED display, in which pixels generate their own light (I am not aware of its availability on TVs at a viable price at the moment).

Generally speaking, reviews agree that image quality improvements of an LED illuminated LCD TV are marginal (unless very expensive local dimming LED) and the term is abused by marketing as usual. You still see clouding, lack of uniformity and bleeding.

LEDs are thinner, prettier and more efficient and as mentioned, only the more expensive local dimming ones have real image quality advantages to match a good plasma (I think that plasma has less resolution though).

I still have my 5 year old CCFL based Sony and it is still as stunning as the first day, though it has a (relatively) thick profile and dated aesthetics. When it is time for me to switch, I'll go with a local dimming Samsung ... by then, prices should be reasonable.

Like I said on a previous post on this thread, I really liked most Samsung LED LCDs I've seen regardless of configuration, and they look real good when turned off as well.

I'm a plasma guy and I own a Pioneer Elite Kuro...they've been discontinued a while back. If I were to buy a new TV today I would seriously look at the new Sharp Elite TVs (not the regular Sharp models).

I got an 8th generation Kuro-last series produced by Pio,the newers are all Pio branded Panasonic-,more than happy with it.

the D8000 looks spectacular ... and the 55 is only 2k in amazon, and 2.8 for the 60 ... I paid 2k for my 42 Sony 5 years ago ... amazing! Maybe IT IS time to upgrade after all!!
