Briton Loses Legs In Cape Town Shark Attack

http://uk.news.yahoo.com/briton-lose...152718919.html

A British man has lost his legs in a shark attack after he ignored a warning not to go swimming at a South African beach.

The 42-year-old, who has not yet been named, ignored signs at the beach in Cape Town warning against entering the water.

Authorities said he was attacked by a great white shark at Fish Hoek Beach.

The attack came an hour-and-a-half after shark spotters had seen the animal and raised a warning flag.

I would have pulled him up onto the boat and said "can you read?" if he answered yes he would have been put back over board for stupidity!

All due respect, I don't think it is something to make fun of or be judgmental about, even if the guy was reckless. We all do stupid things.

According to the news here, Michael Cohen died today.

Maybe he did not see the signs......we do not know what happened. Some comments here, are very harsh in the circumstances, imo.

There's being reckless & then just plain stupid - I'll let you make up your own opinion !! Hope he hasn't died & makes a recovery. Maybe the publicity will save some others his pain.

http://uk.news.yahoo.com/shark-attac...104053658.html

One of the first on the scene was shark spotter Monwabisi Sikweyiya, who has told how he helped drag the victim from the water.

He said Mr Cohen had lived in the area for years and was known as a regular swimmer at the beach.

"He was very interested in sharks and respected them, but never took any notice of our warnings," he told The Daily Telegraph.

"If he wanted to swim, he swam. We warned him often that he was taking a risk, but he always said 'if a shark takes me, then blame me, not the shark'.

Not to be disrespectful and its horrible that he passed - but it was his own stupidity and recklessness that cause his death. Why put others in harms way (possible people who may have to save him) for his own reckless actions, which was my point.

This is a crazy story. On the news this morning they said that he was personally warned not to go in...

If you guys haven't watched the video footage, they show the whites hovering out in the water and the assumed killer was still out floating around long after they pulled him out of the water.

I agree but someone who has been swimming in shark infested waters all his life, the warnings dont mean much. you are far more likley to die in a car crash or plane than by a shark, and it doesnt stop us travelling by car or plane.
TO us: if we saw a shark sign we/i would not even go near the water but as said, to someone used to doing it it does not have the same effect

Kind of reminds me of the three young adults that were swept over Vernal Fall in Yosemite a few months ago (only one of the bodies has been recovered at this point). Why anyone would expose themselves to that risk is beyond me.

Eh - you have to take those warnings seriously. That's not just "doing something stupid like we all do," that is being reckless with your life. Big difference. When we start seeing seals off Cape + Islands beaches we stay a little closer to shore b/c the sharks aren't far behind. Sure, the LIKELIHOOD of anything happening is small, but that is because we heed the warnings!

BTW, where is the link that he died? Last I've heard on news sites, including CNN, is that he's alive: http://news.blogs.cnn.com/2011/09/29...own/?hpt=hp_t2
