Quality Butane Lighters? Care to share

Dupont is a great brand. Ronson are also OK.

I been using this Colibri torch and very happy with it. It's got a built in cigar punch too.
Make sure to purchase a lighter w/ a fuel level indicator window.

Butane lighters fall into two categories - blowtorch style or real flame style.

The torch lighters are excellent but have a very high attrition rate. They can cost quite abit and won't last for too loing before they need replacement due to the element burning out.

The real flame (traditional lighter) can last a lifetime depending on brand but are not vey good in high wind.

If you're prepared to spend the money I highly recommend the Dunhill Rollagas. I have looked at other brands such as the ST Dupont but the Rollagas has it in the feel and overall quality.

Mine is similar to the one below but there are hundreds of different finishes available.



It cost me more than a weeks wages over 17 years ago ( I was young and poor) and I've never regretted it. The lighter is a piece of engineering perfection and it's the small details that make all the difference.

The refill area has a beautifully machined spring loaded cover so you won't get pocket lint caught up in it.

The cap of the lighter is secured with what looks like a hydraulic (it isn't but it looks like it) telescopic catch which operates flawlessly. The flint is a larger than standard size so it makes a larger than expected spark ensuring it lights first time, every time.

All the interior workings around the flame nozzle and the catch are gold plated not for looks but so they don't corrode over the years.





It's a stunning piece of Swiss precision engineering and can't praise it highly enough. For ten of the 17 years it was used 20 times a day without incident. Since giving up cigarrettes I now only use it for cigars perhaps once or twice a week but if it broke I wouldn't hesitate to get it serviced at the Dunhill Service Centre.

You're supposed to use triple filtered Dunhill gas but I've always used the cheap stuff from the local store and it's worked fine.

It's the lighter equivalent of a Rolex and if it was stolen I'd purchase another without hesitating.

I have had many, however nothing compares to my Cartier pasha lighter. The function is full proof, the weight let's you feel good about the money, well spent. After the first few drops it feels like a tool, akin to something else that also bears " Swiss made".

Don't smoke myself but a bit of a cheapskate so a box of matches will do but when I used to smoke 30 odd years ago used gas lighters from Ronson.

My Xikar has lasted me a number of years without any problems. Bought an ST Dupont 2 years ago and am very happy with it.

Nothing like the Dupont ping.

Quality is a relatively term in tobacco accessory land. I often comment that no matter how much you spend, it inevitably breaks. The good companies have lifetime replacement.

Xicar is great, Promethius too. Vector is an up and coming company. I have a Vector insert that is a butane soft flame for zippo. They do a torch version too.

I just got this Room 101 lighter. It's a tank. Has the Vector Thunderbird insert.
