i loved the stroller part. we bought a bugaboo because it was by far the best, lightest and toughest you can get for your money. considering the crap you can buy for nearly as much, it is a bargain and we put it away and will use it for the second one as well....kind of rolex, isn't it?

I'm a retired civil service worker who happens to appreciate fine watches. I am by no means rich at all. I work hard,pay my bills & save for the better things that I like. If people think that I'm well off because of my rolex then so be it. I don't owe anyone any explaination on how I spend my money execpt my wife.

If you buy a product for the right reasons (e.g., you love the brand, its quality, long-lasting, etc.), there's no problems. But there are those that buy products for their status symbols, and Rolex is by far one of the top brands to buy if you want status without knowing about the watch beforehand. I think the article is more referring to those people that have a lot of money but don't care to research a product, they just want what costs a lot and is flashy.

Curious that Rolex's retail sales are up 11% in the past year, especially considering the retail price increases.

Rolex S.A. markets it watches among the plebeian as a powerful status symbol. It's adverts and marketing strategy have been so successful, that Rolex is viewed by gullible people all over the world as the ultimate hand made luxury watch.

The reality is that Rolex is a mass produced watch and a triumph of marketing over horology.

It is precisely this marketing strategy of Rolex that suckers people who can't really afford to buy Rolex, into doing so, because the brand carries such strong aspirational value.

Even on this forum you can see tasteless photos of people with their Rolex posing with luxury vehicles. There are also several long running threads devoted to topics like: Is your car a match with your Rolex?

I've posted on that thread and I'd say my 14060m and my Jeep ARE a match...

Both, as you say, mass produced and capable of being used as true hardworking tools but with more luxury built in than is strictly necessary for a purely functional item...

You made a lot of valid points about what a lot of people think about the Rolex brand but I'd say most people on here know EXACTLY what's strapped to their wrists.

This is why I DON'T wear dinner plate size watches!!!!!! If I'm wearing a cuffed shirt, my watch resides under the cuff where it belongs. No need to shout "Look at me!!!!!" If I'm wearing short sleeves, I'm usually wearing my stainless Airking which looks more like a Seiko than a Rolex. Fine by me.
