I like them

because Rolex is way easier to pronounce than Jaeger LeCoultre or Vacheron Constantin.

Believe it or not, that makes a difference in why Rolex is as big as it is today, all about marketing and how their name is very easy to say in any language and accent! One of the many things Rolex thought of to be what they are today.

Not saying it makes all the difference, but it certainly does do something!

Because people like brand names. Don't get me wrong, they're great watches. Are they the most horologically complicated movements...probably not. It's the same reason why people like Ralph Lauren Polo shirts. Rolex like Polo has this really great brand name. It's expensive enough to be exclusive but not too much so that it's unobtainable. In a similar example, Kiton makes some of the finest dress shirts (mother of pearl buttons, hand stitching, excellent cotton) but they're about $600/shirt plus there is no obvious marking on the shirt that tells people it's a Kiton, meanwhile you can buy a Ralph Lauren Polo dress shirt for about a hundred bucks, less if you they are on sale and it'll usually have that man on a horse logo that will let people know this isn't a $30 shirt from the GAP.
Make no mistakes about it, if Rolex made unbranded watches, 90% of people who buy Rolexes wouldn't buy that other watch. It's the reason why people in marketing still have jobs.

For me it is because they are tough as nails.

I for one have never had problems with a Rolex, other than normal service.
I can't say that for the other brand. Zenith, Breitling, Omeg, Wakman, Gervil etc, even my old Sekio chronograph.

The Rolex name stands for quality and durability that will last a couple of human lifetimes.

It's impossible to divorce the reputation built over a period of more than 100 years and Hans Wilsdorf, the marketing genius, who used his genius and strong work ethic to build a watch empire like no other.

You can build the most marvelous device in the world, but if you don't know how to market it, you may as well have invented the sharp stick.

Conversely, if you happen to be a marketing genius who wastes his talents marketing snake oil, then given enough time, you will be known as nothing more than a fraud.

When Wilsdorf began to market his watches, it was the tradition of the day to have the jeweler's name on the watch. Wilsdorf coined the name Rolex and insisted that jewelers who bought his watches would also buy a percentage with the name Rolex on the dial.

Eventually, he was able to market watches with the name Rolex on the dial exclusively.

When you understand a little about the history of Rolex and how it began and the trails they blazed in the world of horology, your conclusion makes very little sense.

Rolex and quality are synonymous and it matters not one whit what other watch manufactures specialize in. Rolex is still the masters of their game.

If Rolex made an unbranded line of watches that had the same designs as their current lines at half the price I'd be crazy not to buy them as long as I knew for certain that the only difference was the lack of a name.

Rolex would be just as crazy to market unbranded watches, when they spent over a century building a reputation and name recognition that is unparalleled in the watch world.

Because I can wear it everyday under any circumstances and not have to worry about it I'm not a flashy person at all so I could care less who notices it. I don't wear it for them, I wear it for me

I agree with all that has been said and would add one additional thought. Because the designs are stable and the changes are evolutionary in nature, when you buy one, you become part of a long chain of people that have owned and enjoyed them. Also, they are timeless so my wife and I know that one day our son and daughter will (hopefully) appreciate them the way we have........

Well, why did the chicken cross the road? To get to the other side. Why do I like Rolex? It does a really good job telling me what time it is, reliably, durably, and stylishly.

To me it was a milestone I wanted to reach. A reward to oneself.

IMO the watch is worth every penny considering the many years of use and enjoyment I will get from owning a Rolex.

Iconic designs, honored heritage, and I love the look of certain models. When I got into watches I thought Rolex would be all daimonds a pearls.... turns out, that's not what they market. They do have diamonds and pearls, but the fact is the watches are tough as nails, have incredibly quiet movements for automatics, and still they are awesome pieces of very highly-detailed jewelry.

Among other fine automatic watches, their quiet movements set them apart, but their intricate details help to seal the deal. Their elegant and iconic designs and attention to detail are icing on top of the cake. Rolex formulated the iconic designs in the industry, with some rare exceptions, and they continue to be at the tip top when it comes to finish and functionality.
