New Submariner No Date Vs Omega Bond 50th
Hello, trying to elicit opinions. Currently own several Omega Watches:
Americas Cup Seamaster; Bond 40th Seamaster; Casino Royale Planet Ocean Apollo Anniversary Speedmaster. As you can see I like Omega and I like Bond. Late last year I had a significant birthday and my other half said she would buy me a watch to celebrate; I was waiting for the 50th Bond but now that I have seen it am somewhat disappointed. I In additon, seems somewhat exploitative that Omega are also oging to offer a Skyfall Planet Ocean and a Skyfall Aqua Terra. So, at some point during my melancholy contemplation my thoughts turned to Rolex, i.e. Bond has worn Rolex in a number of movies and in print, and then I saw the new Submariner no date images from Basel 2012. So my question is simply this: buy the 50th Anniversay Omega or buy the new Sub No Date when it becomes available ? Related question will there be a waiting list for the New Sub. Thanks in advance for any suggestions or advice |

As much as I dislike the idea of a no date ceramic sub I prefer it over the 50th anniversary Bond Seamaster because...well just look at it. Get the 14060m instead, iconic watch (and closer to what the fictual character used to wear back in the Connery/Moore days)

The ND Sub is a classic.
I personally would get the discountinued model with lug holes. older style case, and older style bracelet. Take a look at the current SubC and compare it against the discountinued Sub ND to determine if you think it would be adviseable for you to wait for the newer SubC ND or not. I'm pretty sure the vast majority here will recomend that you get a Sub.

First of all wrong place to ask people to choose between Rolex and any other watch. There was someone asking to choose between Rolex and Patek a few days ago and the poll came pretty close.
I say Sub and to justify ? Have you seen that embossed 007 dial on the seamaster ? It's just wrong. I actually like the older ones but this 50th one ? Lets just say by trying to glam it up for 50 they have made it too Bond obsessed. I doubt Bond would be caught dead in something so fan like. Also your collection needs some Rolex up in there. |

I would take the Sub over those. A regular PO might be another story. I'm just not a huge fan of the Bond editions.

I have the 40th with the embossed dial and that is the rub - the 50th is just more of the same. I would not expect bond to wear the 40th either but was hoping that the homage would be more 'subtle'. I think you might be right about Rolex in the collection. I am very appreciative of all the responses so far |

Time for a Rolex...
IMO... Omega are a dime a dozen especially the "Bond" watches. Heck... as of right now there are 5 other co-workers that have the exact same Omega SMP Bond watch but full size, mine is the mid-size. As for Rolex... only myself - Explorer, another co-worker - '85 Sub Date and my Supervisor - Yacht Master. And as mentioned before the Rolex will have a better re-sale value. My mid-size 14yr old SMP that was recently overhauled ($900 service) by Swatch Group Canada can sell for around $1000 - $1200 the most at least that what offers were coming in. Heck, I would probably be giving it away for free if it had not been fully serviced INCLUDING new dial and bezel insert. I went to a local watch store that sell authentic Rolex had a used 89 Sub Date in excellent condition and was ASKING $5500.... those were going for around $3000 back in 89 if my research is correct. 23 years later you can ask for more than what the Rolex was worth back then and nobody will say a they. With my Omega... 14 years later and just after a complete overhaul by Swatch Group Canada and is "like brand new"condition again and you ask for slightly less than what it cost brand new back then and folks are calling you crazy.... Go Rolex and skip the Omega this time... I'm glad I did. |

The 50th anni SMP is too gimmicky. Nothing about it that I like. Now the new PO...thats a watch!
Between your two choices, Sub all the way.

Let me say that I like Omegas. I have several going all the way back to a '62Seamaster.. I'm even taking my Electric Blue with me to Hawaii next week..
But it is just laughable that Omega would market a 50th Anniversary Bond watch when they have only bought the movie franchise rights in the past decade... And really, what Bond character would even be wearing such a thing ??? OK.. rant off.. The Sub is the true Bond watch - since the beginning; that's the one to get. Omega is only in the Bond films now because they paid their way in..

Omega make one heck of a watch but I just don't like the 50th bond at all. The 14060 is a tue icon and I love mine, so that gets my vote.
If you were considering a ceramic PO with the 8500, now that would be much tougher.

I prefer the look of the Rolex sub vs. the "Bond" Omega.

I like Omegas but the "special editions" are not really my cup of tea (except for the LM 2500C, just gorgeous). That said I would go with the new ND SubC.

Okay, so I am becoming more convinced that Rolex is the way to go but why are people advocating older models over the yet to be released Ceramic Sub ?
Are the superior in some way or is it simply a question of aesthetics ? Sorry if these questions are overly simple. |

I struggle with Omega when they put 007 on the dial etc. Sorry, it just kind of cheapens the watch for me, but each to their own. Sorry.
Would go for the ND Sub, especially a 14060M:

These photos that people are posting are really nice, it reminds me of one of the design principles laid out by Dieter Rams:
Good design is aesthetic. The aesthetic quality of a product is integral to its usefulness because products we use every day affect our person and our well-being. But only well-executed objects can be beautiful. |

Having said that my brother bought a new standard Omega PO 3 weeks ago with the grey-ish ceramic bezel. What a watch !! Probably £2k + cheaper than the Sub no date. |
