Is the "Daytona Saga" over??

I wonder:

I put the recent thread question "are the SS Daytonas getting easier to get" (""Now, all of a sudden, we've got Daytonas coming out of our ears!!". CLICK!) away by replying that market fluctuations are responsible for the seemingly great amount of SS Daytonas hitting the market. "It goes up and down".

But IS Rolex really putting more than usual SS Daytonas on the market; saturizing the market, sort of speak??

Maybe Rolex wants the Milgauss to become the successor to the "Daytona Saga"? What else model could be the successor (if there is any)? Surely not the new GMT IIc, since Rolex already put many of those ones on the market from start on!

Good question Bo. The problem is only the boys in the ivory tower in Geneva know the answer.. I think the Daytona over the last 30 years is special & trying to use the market to force another model in its place is risky & aggressive. And Rolex seem like a very Conservative company. Will be interesting to see if some more arrive to members here over the coming weeks.

Interesting point about possible successor being the Milgauss.
Popular vintage watches tend to sell better than regular ones I suppose, maybe they are capitalizing on the all known rarity of the Daytona, trying to sell as many as possible before the new rage 'Milgauss' comes out?

I would guess the saga isnt over yet. When I went in to the AD today, four guys walked in and asked for Daytona's. Then again, my AD told me today that the Milgauss would be the hardest to get ever.

I have no idea but none of the ADs I've talked to have mentioned getting more than the usual amount of Daytonas. I do have my name on the list for the Green Glass although something will have to go if I get it. I can't justify over four Rollies at a time.

In the gray market, there is a healthy supply of Daytonas available and for sale. Just with the mark ups. Some ADs are also selling them with a premium and mark up or are waiting months and months to get them in.

So as long as:

1. The high mark ups and premiums are still seen

AND

2. The Daytona is still not readily available in many of the ADs, meaning the watch is not seen in the showcase

THEN the Daytona saga lives on! This is just my opinion.

The two AD's that I usually deal with have gotten fewer SS Daytonas in 2007 than in past years. Further, the prices on the grey market have crept up $1-2K this year.

I don't think Daytona's have gotten easier to get by any means... I've been having alot of trouble getting any AD to commit to any timeframe for a Daytona. I've called over a dozen...I've gotten 3 maybes.

In fact, today I got a call from an AD telling me that they won't get any more Daytonas this year and that they cannot keep a list or commit to me in any way. Nice eh?

I was also told that the Milgauss will be as difficult to get as the SS Daytona by 3 separate AD's here in FL.

I saw a black dial SS Daytona 116520 for sale new today at the yen equivalent of $16, 080 USD at a big discount store in Tokyo.

For me I can't see the Milgauss taking over from the Daytona.

Bo I reckon that Rolex could double the Daytona production and still keep it exclusive, Jeez the waiting list in Perth would drop to two years instead of four!!

I think the Daytona will attract a much bigger client base than the Milgauss. The Daytona is a stand-alone watch, nothing in the Rolex line up looks like it. The Milgauss looks like an Explorer I with a funny second hand

I was told by my AD here in England that the stainless steel Daytona was virtually impossible to get, but if I wanted a bi-metal or a gold I could have one in 3 months. He also stated he has not had a single one in the last 3 years and that they can only order one at a time, once one has been supplied he can order another.

Rolex HQ in England are quoting 7-9 years from point of a dealer ordering to watch arriving.

Its a rediculous situation and Rolex know it. Keeping supply lean means that people will trade up to the bi metal or gold version which are more profitable for Rolex, that's the crux of it.

The company with the biggest Rolex account in the UK is watches of Switzerland who's branch manager in Birmingham claims that Rolex guarantee them one per year in SS, they currently have a 15 person waiting list.

Are you basing your conclusion on personal observation or do you have friends or acquantances who have given you facts about a production increase in Daytonas? I haven't noticed a difference yet in my area.

Do you have production numbers for the new Milgauss? How do you know they are going to "limit" production in order for dealers to be able to hike the price or use them as "reward" watches as some do now with the Daytona?

If you judge from the waiting lists and the resulting HUGE premiums that the SS Daytonas get, the "saga" or craze started in 1988 when the automatic "Zenith" movt. Daytona came.

Funny thing is that the earlier Daytonas such as the "Paul Newman" were not popular, at all, when they were made, so many of those Cosmo Rolex watches were lying around in the AD window displays, collecting dust, and you could buy them with 25 % discount!

I'll say it again, my grey market dealer says the new Milgauss goes for $4K over MSRP.
People on this forum say their AD's say it'll sell at MSRP. We shall see..... As far as the Daytona 'legend' is concerned, I will leave it to others who know the watch and its history(for example, Hemingway wore a Daytona...I mean C'MON!)....to tell me it's future.

IMO the all hype being created for Miliguass is probably just the buzz marketing to get the watch successfully in the market.
It is but obvious that in the initial year the Milguass would be a rare find like the GMT II ceramic but it has to do nothing with the Daytona and ther's no doubt that still the SS Daytona is the watch hardest to obtain from an AD.

I gave up on the Daytona waited too long. Put the money onto something else and I don't feel bad about it. I am happy for people who get one as I feel lucky to have my LV Sub. I still love the look of the Daytona it is pure class.
