Warranty tranferability?

Hi all,

I recently bought my first Rolex Daytona pre-owned, from an authorized dealer. I'm thrilled with the purchase, as it is a model I've had my eyes on for awhile.

The original owner only had it for a short time before trading it in for another watch. As such, there is still substantial time left on the original Rolex warranty. The AD sent the watch to me with the original warranty card (original owner's name on it). I called the dealer to ask about this and they told me that the original warranty card should not have been sent to me. They said that I should send it back to them so that they can return it to Rolex, who will then issue a new card with my name on it.

Does this sound right? I've heard that the original owner's warranty card can't be changed or replaced, and that Rolex won't honor the warranty for anyone other than the original owner. I've also heard that RSCs will occasionally service a pre-owned watch under the original warranty as long as the new owner has the original warranty card. Alternatively, I've heard horror stories about an RSC confiscating a watch that has a new owner, but a warranty card from a previous owner because they think it might be stolen.

So, in short, does anyone have experience with buying a pre-owned Rolex from and AD that is still under warranty and how the warranty transfer is handled vis a vis the warranty card, service under warranty, etc.?

I've never heard of a warranty card being re-issued after a pre-owned sale.....they might just want the card back and then you are in trouble if you need any warranty work....

ADs can sell a brand new watch, and suppose the watch is returned, but the owner's name and date of purchase is still on the warranty card. Suppose he never wore the watch and kept the plastics on it, and after a few days just feel like the watch isn't right for him, and returns it, the AD can send the card back to Rolex for issuance of a completely new BLANK card. There is a fee. This is why you see many large chain stores like Reeds withholding the card from you for 30 days after you buy your watch, and they will mail the card to your house to make sure in case you change your mind they do not have to pay the replacement card fee to Rolex USA. If this Rolex you describe is a very recent purchase, which it sounds like it was, then I believe that is what happened.

Lastly, warranty goes with the watch, not owner in RSC Dallas. I have sent two pieces to them and I was the second owner not my name on the card, but within the warranty period, and work was done without questions asked. RSC NY I have no personal experience.

Warranty with the watch, not the owner - up here in Canada land.

I don't believe rolex re-issues warranty cards. Doesnt make much sense to me

NY has refused service too on a 2 owner watch within the warranty period

update

Ok, so I called all three RSCs here in the U.S. to ask about the warranty card. They all told me that Rolex does not issue new warranty cards in a situation like this, and that the warranty follows the watch, so it will still be honored under new ownership as long as I have the card, which I do. Could the AD really be that misinformed??

Furthermore, NY told me I need a bill of sale to prove that I'm the new owner. No problem. However, CA told me that they don't need anything other than the watch and the original warranty card.

Everyone is on a slightly different page with this, ha.

That's what if you got the watch as a gift....IMHO, if you have the card, you sdhould be fine, but sadly that's not the case.

And, yes, either the AD was BS on the fly, or they have no idea about Rolex procedures...or maybe they do not have the card at all....

Yep, I suspect the AD was feeding me a line of crap... hopefully just out of ignorance rather than deception... (lesser of two evils).

The good new is I have the original warranty card. While it would be nice to have a fresh one with my name on it, I'm not going to take a chance on not getting any card back.

This will all be moot when the warranty is up anyhow.

Don't return the card. A new one will not be issued by Rolex on a used watch.

However, we have had many discussion posts about the question of whether Rolex USA will honor a warratnty with another name on the card. the answer is: depends. NY won't, Dallas will.

So keep the card and if you need warranty work, send it to Dallas.

If you return the warranty card you will be left with NO warranty card, because Rolex won't reissue it with your name on it.

RSCNY will as there was a thread about this issue - I've called them on several occasions and they have verified that it follows the watch. There was a another thread about this where the person at RSCNY made a stink about it and Rolex legal got involved to resolve it.

I've bought mine in Australia & UK and the conditions of warranty set out in both booklets make no mention of the owner to which the warranty applies. I imagine this would be Rolex policy worldwide. The only risk I could see being a 2nd/3rd owner would be that at some time prior a non authorised person had opened and interfered with the watch, but this why you buy from a seller of good repute.
