What to see and do in NYC?

Looks like I will be spending five days in NYC.

Any recommendations for things to see and do, besides the obvious, i.e. best coffee shop, best pizza place or "tourist" attractions off the beaten track?

It's become very touristy but i can't go to NYC without going to the Doughnut-Plant, they have the best freaking doughnuts I've ever tasted, totally worth the calories!! need to run 5 miles just to work them off but i do so willingly!!

just brought my visitors to the doughnut plant, its just across my street. running.... maybe 5 miles x 5 times

pizza ... south brooklyn pizza on 1st ave and 7 st in manhattan $4 per slice = my favorite
pizza ... 2 brothers on st marx (across the street from above) $1 per slice = time warp, not bad.

some quick math will show how to make it a bargain:
1x $4 excellent slice + 2 x $1 time warp slice = $6 / 3 slice = $2 per slice average... a bargain no matter how you slice it

lower east side is a food mecca from the doughnut plant to katz deli and russ and daughters jewish deli= fish (salmon/lox etc)

east village has some of the best italian restaurants in the city, all in the single digit streets.

German food/beer on ave C and 7 st for a great afternoon catch a table on the sunny side of the street!

soooo much more

check out the "frying pan" on west 26 st and the water.

Gosh, theres so many places to eat. Here's a few off the beaten path neighborhood joints (with the exception of Lombardi)

Lombardi's on Spring street for Pizza. Go during 'off-hours', lines can be insane. No slices, pies with 2 topping abt $30.. cash only. Good location for tourists..Little Italy, Chinatown, Soho.

Bubba's in Tribeca for Breakfast
Le Grainne Cafe in Chelsea for crepes. My favorite is chicken, goat cheese and leeks combo.
Morandi in the W Village for Brunch. Keith McNally's (Baltazar) joint.
The bruschetta with ricotta, honey and pine nuts is to die for!

When are you coming in? City is nice & quiet in August.

Pizza go to Rays. Not one of the 25+ knockoffs but the original. If all else fails find a stand with a line. It will be good. Also we usually enjoy walking around 5th ave just for the sites. We also enjoy hitting up the museums. Tons to choose from and on a hot day nice to stay in the AC.

Go to Eataly, it is a must for good food. I recommend the restaurant inside called Le Verdure. http://eatalyny.com/eat/le-verdure

For Italian try Valbella, I was at the one in the meatpacking district, but there is also one in midtown (11 E. 53rd St).

Avoid Carnegie Deli like the plague, what do Korean's know about a Jewish Deli??? Haven't been to Katz's, but will the next time.

the ''RAYS" has officially closed about a year ago, it was on prince st and imho it wasn't very special but there is no shortage of worthwhile pizza here.

The two significant Ray's pizza's are both closed. The real and original Ray's on Prince closed in 2011 and Famous Ray's on 6th (The infamous one where NY students studying in London flew to NYC to pick up pizza to bring back to London) closed over a trademark dispute owned by the Famous Original Ray's chain.

Sad but true

Didn't now that but I haven't been there since 09. I agree that I have had a better pie but it was just a cool place to go. Thanks for letting me know so I won't try to find it next time im in NYC.

All good suggestions, appreciate it, thanks!

Is it too late to get tickets to a broadway show for the beginning of next week? Any recommendations?

Its never too late to get tickets but if it's a popular show, be prepared to buy premium seat tickets. TKTS sells same day tickets at a discount. Go to the Seaport location and avoid the monstrous line in Times Square.

If you're going with adults, I'd suggest
Phantom - If you've never seen it
Jersey Boys
Spiderman
Once (I haven't seen it but loved the movie so its top on my list to see)

Def not too late. Check out the TKTS booth in times square or south street seaport. Same day tickets at deep discount. Google the theatre development fund. That's who runs it. As for pizza you have to go to artichoke pizza. There are three in the city now. Cirque du soleil has a show at radio city till beginning of September also. Ground zero. Believe is a must. I'm a native new Yorker and havent done the touristy stuff since I was a kid. Let me know where you're staying and I can give you a better idea of local things to do.

We've been 3 times in 5 years. I would recommend:

Yankees game
Katz's Deli, brisket sandwich (might be called corned beef, very different to UK corned beef!)
Woodbury Common outlet
Bodies exhibition
Ground Zero
The Rockerfeller Centre
Broadway show, Jersey Boys without hesitation
Buy a Metrocard for the week, great value
Smith and Wollensky for a superb steak
Bloomingdales is excellent (very much like our Selfridges)
The Mad Hatter, good bar

NYC is basically incredible. Enjoy!

i really like big nick's. very american and newyorker feel for a european.

otherwise walk, walk, walk.......

So much to do. I grew up 10 miles outside the city and interned there while in college. I've done and seen a lot. Yet, when I went up a few weeks ago we still packed our day with things to do and see. Here are some pics...

For an intimate Italian dinner I suggest bottega del vino, 7 east 59th. I've never had a bad meal there and it's right next to the park.
There's a ton to do but try not to feel overwhelmed and remember to have a great time!

They still don't take credit cards, right? That's a detail to know before going.

Tenement Museum in the Lower East Side for a very interesting insight into immigrants' experience in the early 20th c. The Lower East Side generally is fun.

If you like art museums at all, the Met and MOMA (Museum of Modern Art) are essentials, with collections unlike anywhere else.

They sure do accept credit cards..
the thing with TKTS is that you most likely wont get the better seats...ie.. center Orch.
Unless one gets lucky, the seats are usually near the aisles (near the walls)

Drive 4 hours north and visit Newport Rhode Island. Visit the mansions, walk downtown and you have to try Dell's lemonade. The best frozen lemonade ever.

Pizza: Grimaldi's in Brooklyn & Pullino's in the Village
My favorite lunch spot: PJ Clarke's - 915 3rd Ave.
Of course some great watch shops and Boutique's = definately reccomend a stop in the AP Boutique on 57th.
Enjoy the trip..
