Ostentatious? Isn't that the name of the tools you use when cooking?

When I feel like being ostentatious and pretentious I will wear my Rolex. When I feel like being a humble fanatic I'll put on the Speedy and make fun of the obnoxious and pretentious Rolex owners who have no clue what the plain black watch with the little dials is. When I go to the next James Bond movie I will wear my James Bond watch because I can shoot guns and drive cars just like him and everyone that sees my watch will know it too!

This poll needs a third choice - Most owners think they are an action movie star.

I purchased my first because it said 'Submariner'. After purchasing I did a little research into the brand, a little research turned into a lot of digging and so the familiar story goes. Had the Submariner been made by Omega or Tag I feel that I would have stopped at one. There is just so much about Rolex that you always want to carry on digging. As for pretencious etc, no - I'm a jeans & t-shirt guy but won't look out of place amongst the suits, I buy into the brand for the quality/history of the brand not the status. Many of my friends also have Rolex, although most if not all own only one.

I'd have to agree with you here...this is a very good point.

As someone once said to me Carl...."never assume....assumption is the death of good investigation "

However, stalking no....watching ....yes

As for hijacking....I thought they were perfectly respectable answers ...given the logic of the initial question

I opted for number two. IMHO, I think most people around here, including myself, are watch fanatics. There are certainly a lot of people that buy a Rolex for status. In fact, my brother-in-law recruited me to find him a Sub. I did. Then he complained that his watch was stopping sometimes. He had no idea about the movement, or that it was an automatic. I assumed he knew what he was buying. For him, it's purely status... Nothing wrong with that.

In my own mind, yes, it is a status symbol and a goal that I strove towards since I was young.

As is known herein, most people do not know or care what I have on my wrist.

Me, flauntingly showy?

I'm just a locksmith (with a watch habit)!

Even Mitt didn't care what I was wearing!

I believe so. It was not usual for men, particularly back in the Regency era, to wear corsets, to achieve a wasp waist.

As respectable as posting pictures of lions in a thread regarding Bill Clinton's Jaeger-Lecoultre, one might say!

I find this highly offensive to brown haired guys like myself!

Wait until Dalip hears about this...oh, heck, nevermind! He's probably still "watching" me!

Well said Julian. For me, I'd have to agree that I was initially attracted by the name. The Rolex reputation inspired me to learn more about their watches and ultimately buy one.

I'm a Rolex fanboy, I currently own nothing but Rolex. Yes, I'm attracted to the brand, and in the popular press, the brand stands for luxury, and it's a status symbol to most of the population, especially those that don't own one. Members on TRF aren't perhaps representative of the general population, we're all more watch 'aware' and see other things about Rolex that many don't.

I'll be honest, ever since buying precious metal models, the SS models don't hold as much attraction to me. Once you go gold, you can't go back lol. So, does that mean me wanting the wear gold or platinum watches make me ostentatious? I must admit, my Plat attracts little attention, but my RG Daytona attracts attention everywhere, perhaps more that I prefer. I don't 'show it off', but when it's on my arm, the colour seems to attract people's eyes. I'm now looking for a YG Rolex of some description, to go with my gold / diamond ring, and diamond earring ... I love my bling! Is that bad??? I dunno, I don't over think or over analyse it, I just like gold and diamonds!

It's not that I'm pompous or arrogant, it's just that I'm really better than everyone else.

Oh - and I wear a Rolex because I'm a ladies man!
