Want suggestions on a birth year rolex

Hey guys and gals,
I wanted to get some ideas from the experts on getting a birth year rolex. I was born in 1979. I want to get something along the lines of a sports watch like a sub or GMT. I am really drawing a blank on what to get and I really want it to be a cool and special watch. Something I can pass down to my son when I die.
It is cool, he is now 12 and he has my passion for watches. He has worn my rolex a few times and asked for a Tag or Omega for his 13'th birthday. I asked why he didn't ask for a rolex and he said he knew he wouldn't get one this young so he would wait to ask for that when he turns 18. Got to love that kid. Has great taste and he knows how to work the system. Lol

Sounds like you need to start saving for your sons watch.

My favorite is a 5512 Sub.

If you are looking for something "cool," look no further than a vintage GMT. The multicolored bezel inserts in red and blue look pretty cool to me and are not as bland or plain as the black inserts - like those found on some of the GMT's and Submariners.

That is a very cool idea springer. I had not thought about that. I have been wanting to get a GMT anyway with the multicolored bezel. I guess this would be a good time to do it with some very good meaning

I really like the GMT idea. I guess I am going to start looking for a good example of it. Does anyone have a good place to find older watches that is reputable and provides good examples

I have decided on what it will be. I want to find a black face stainless still sub from 1979. I love the look of subs. I think they are elagent but are very versatile.
Can some one point me in the right direction or send me some links on info to research on the specifics on the 1979 sub with serial numbers to look for and all the specifics so I can make sure it is a watch that is the way it came back then

I did a fair amount of research here on TRF- this helped me to obtain this 1978 1680 sub, my current daily wear watch...

I recommend reading through the 1680 submariner posts here on TRF, you will find lots of information. There are also a few great links on the 1680 submariner models.. Here is a great red sub link, the less expensive white subs like mine came after the red approx 1973 to 1980. Help me out here guys, there are more experts on here with good submariner information...:

Here is another suggestion for an older Sub. The 16800 was produced after the 1680 models, it has a sapphire crystal, quickset date, and has just a slightly heavier feel. These models come in two dial variations.

The difference for me is that the 16800 model is significantly less expensive in relation to the true vintage 1680 rolexes. Don't discount these transitional submariners. I really like the two I own. They are keepers...

I agree with joe100 in that the young man should probably work for a while during his life and obsess, dream and lust first for some years. It makes it all the more special when he finally receives it. An old sub or gmt could make a great college grad present.

Big fan of the forum, and this is actually my first post.

I am in a somewhat similar position to Financeman and looking for a birth year watch.

I just can't decide whether to go with a 16800, or a Tudor Sub Snowflake.

Finances don't stretch for both, and I am concerned that I will always pine for the other once I purchase one.

Which one is the keeper? Thoughts?

My suggestion is to wait and save for the Rolex if you REALLY are interested in the Submariner. If you were solely into Tudor, then I'd say go that route, but you'll still yearn for that Rolex !

I was lucky enough to have a local contact with too many watches. It took several years, but he now sells his safe queen Rolex and omega watches to me.

I have a Tudor 7928 submariner, it's a 1966 watch, though I was born in 1965- close enough for me...

That's what the heart is telling me.

But if the right Blue 94110 came up. It would be a very difficult decision.
