My wife has her own hobbies - shoes, bags, etc... She's not in to watches, but likes my watch collection, especially the white Daytona.

MY wife is ok for me buying nice watches/expensive clothes (especially footwear). she knows they will make me happy. and i don't really care when she spends money on the expensive handbags which will make her happy. But she doesn't care much about the expensive watches, at least they look good with her outfits and handbags, so then it's good to go.

Well said Karis! I think it's always a matter of personal taste and opinions and I don't think the gender of somebody has anything to do with it. My girlfriend doesn't have a watch and a few of my friends, whether they are men or women, don't have the passion I have for them. As long as everybody is happy... Besides, the good thing is that she doesn't really mind if I buy myself a few watches as long as I don't ruin myself...and as long as I don't decide to trade them for tarantulas...

My wife doesn't get it either... I have 4 in my collection and she has put a lid on random Rolex purchases. I don't mind though - it's nice to be a little more fiscally responsible.
She does not give me grief about my 4... and that's all that matters. She knows I'm a happy clam.

Everyone has their own "thing." I have friends who like motorcycles, cars, guns, quads, etc. Their wives typically don't care about those things and enjoy clothes, handbags, and other things. My wife doesn't necessarily "get" my enjoyment of watches but she accepts it. I don't "get" her enjoyment of handbags and clothes and shopping but I accept it. I think it's one of those oddities of relationships.

I wonder How the watch industry views the topic? It seems that many watches designed for women advertise the cosmetic aspects of the watch while watches designed for men boast the technical aspects.
I know of one watch brand that has identical watch styles for men and women but the women's has a quartz movement and the men's has a mechanical movement. The AD told me it was because women (in general) don't like to worry about keeping the watch wound. |

My wife loves watches, but not on herself!..(she prefers diamonds )
Many a time she has said to me, "get that one"... knowing nothing about the specific watch, brand, price, etc...just that she likes the look of it. I avoid showing her pics of Kens collection cause that may help to send me bankrupt

Dare I say that like most issues between men and woman it's communications?!? I mean at least in my case it was, I won't assume that my scenario plays out the same way for all of us, of course it doesn't but there maybe a seed of this in a lot of our conflicts.
I never told my wife "why" I like watches, I never explained to her what the deal was or what about the craftsmanship, the style, the utilitarian elegance and expression of "self". She didn't get it at first and she shook her head, I tried the jewelry comparison and she got a glazed over look (my wife doesn't like or wear opulent jewelry) then I remembered our last trip to the Caribbean, she bought a $2700 Chanel bag so I likened the two. She didn't buy it at first but she came around as soon pointed out the PP ad in Departures magazine. She started to get it then and slowly but surely she has come around, to the point now that when I talk about getting my grail, I have to finish with and we can see about getting you something in NYC next month ****EDITED TO ADD I forgot the most important part, the reason I had this revelation was not because I had a stroke of genius, it's cause I'm a jerk. After she bought that purse I gave her a hard time because a week after coming home from the Caribbean she spent $700 at Coach for a new purse. I said "why after buying your dream purse are you spending money on another purse that isn't as nice?" she explained the need for an everyday purse vs. the "jem" purse and that each purse had it's purpose. Moreover she explained why she loves purses, what they mean to her and why they are worth the money. From that point on I haven't given her guff about her purses.

Mods can you please close this thread it looks like I have offended people and that was not the point of this thread, it was just my observation of my friends wifes, girlfriends regarding not understanding my love for a nice watch. But it appears I worded it wrong and upset people so please close the the thread before more people get upset.

There are plenty of men that doesn't get it neither
My suggest is to stop trying to "figure it out", different people like different stuff. that's it. it got nothing to do with gender differences.

She bought three leather purses. Each had a unique and specific purpose. I was impressed with the amount of thought and planning she put into pursuing them, and even more impressed with her bargaining skills with the vendors. |
