Sugar Bowl
Hi All,
I'm passing on my Trojans this year at the Rose Bowl to make the trip to the Sugar Bowl to watch the Hawaii Warriors make their first BCS (and hopefully not last) appearance. I've never been to New Orleans so I was wondering where you would recommend seeing. I definitely will take in the D-Day Museum along with the French Quarter. However, is there anything else you recommend? I'll be in town from the night of Sat. the 29th to Wed. the 2nd. |

I've never been to New Orleans but I'm envious of you! Here in Hawaii there's a bit of a controversy regarding ticket sales. AD Herman Frazier gave up a bunch of alotted tickets back to the Sugar Bowl commitee thinking that Hawaii people won't go. He was wrong. People are willing to spend money to watch our beloved Warriors.
Amazing what June Jones did. The team was dead last 9 years ago to #10 in the nation. "Size and strength was bullcrap....I believe you can take a little kid and teach him how to turn little plays into big plays...and he won't be so dang little anymore...." First is Deanie's. Don't go to the one in the French Quarter, go out to the one in Bucktown. It's the original and you'll get more of the local flavor. I'm not usually a fan of fried seafood, but their seafood platter is legendary! Also, try the BBQ shrimp (not a tomato based sauce or traditional BBQ in any way, just the name) and the boudain balls - like hush puppies with boudain sausage in them. http://secure.deanies.com/bucktown.html Closer to the French Quarter is a cajun food landmark called Mothers - authentic cajun food, huge portions, and reasonable prices. http://www.mothersrestaurant.net/ For entertainment, see who's playing at Tipatina's. http://www.tipitinas.com/default.asp Hope you have a great trip and don't forget to stock up on cheap plastic beads for some extra entertainment on Bourban Street! |

You will love the French Quarter. It is really unique. See if you can take a cemetery tour. I know it sounds weird, but they offer tours of some of the famous cemeteries of New Orleans. You could also tour some of the old homes in and around the city of New Orleans. Below is a picture of Oak Alley Plantation located outside of New Orleans. It has been featured in many movies including Interview With a Vampire. Also a couple of pictures of the French Quarter and a New Orleans Cemetery. The last two pictures are of Mobile just in case you decide to venture out that far (downtown and Dauphin Street). I doubt you would have the time or interest but Mobile, AL is only 2 hours from the French Quarter. Mobile is sort of a smaller more family oriented version of New Orleans and the birthplace of Mardi Gras in North America. You are welcome here also. Have a safe trip and a great time. Here is a good link with information about places in NO to visit.

I know of two or three families that are going from the Austin area, they are paying like $250 a ticket and smiling about it. I think Hawaii fans will travel better than many think.

I don't know about them specifically, but a lot of them do. I was down there for 6 months working on the Katrina recovery and these were places recommended by the locals. I love that food, but eating it every day for 6 months cost me 35 pounds in the wrong direction!

You'll have a blast!. I recently moved from New Orleans, just got tired of the lingering Katrina thing(my co. offered me a promotion, which made the move a no brainer). The French Quarter and most of downtown are back to normal but, there's still alot of damage remaining. Where will you be staying? I could give you a plethora of information. Have fun!!!

Thanks for the tips guys. Wayno, I'll get back to you on the hotel. Someone else is doing the reservation so I should find out tomorrow. I'll definitely have a room through some connections she has. Her company has already blocked about 200 rooms at a couple of the major hotels there.
Would I need a rental car there or are taxis and public transportation the way to go? Any recommendations for beignets? |
