Decisions Decisions...

I've been on the fence between the GMT II C and the Explorer II black dial. I really like both, but would love to hear what the community thinks.

Which would you rather purchase if you could only have one, and why?

Love and own both, however, if I must choose it would be the 216570! The 1655 is my all time favorite Rolex timepiece and I like what Rolex did with the 216570...

Which way are you leaning?

Slight lean to the GMT, but I'm not sure now. Thanks!

I am strongly considering a white dial Explorer as this years purchase. It seems much more a watch where form follows function. The GMT to me is too blingy and looks like a Sub with an extra hand and giant numbers on the bezel

Toughie there. They are both great in their own way. They are both less common than subs. The WIS in me says 216570 all day (polar for me). However, I am currently in the same position as you, except throw in the DSSD and the Hulk! Ahhhhhh! Haha.

If I had to choose between those two right now, I would buy GMT IIc.

Have you already tried them on?

From pictures I had a "poor" opinion of the Explorer II but once I put it on my wrist I totally "understood" the watch.

Still I do not own any of them and I am planning, nonetheless, on a GMT II. But now, after having seen the EXP II in the flesh, I like it much more than before...

ps: by mistake I voted for the EXP II, but I meant to do it for the GMT II... sorry about messing up your poll!

I have both and they really are very different but I love wearing both. The bezels obviously are the major difference and the ExpII 42 face seems larger but doesn't sit as high as the GMTC. I personally like brushed links and had the PCL's brushed on my GMTc but that would also be a consideration. Long story short, you can't go wrong with either.

The ExpII says, "psst...I'm a Rolex."
The GMTIIC screams, "HEY! I'M A ROLEX!"
Not that there's anything WRONG with that. I just prefer a bit of subtlety.
I vote ExpII.

I said GMT, but if you were talking about a Polar 16570 it would be a different story.

both great. for me, the GMT is the most versatile watch out there.

coming from a flipper, this is one watch that will never ever leave my stable.

I tried both of them on. At first I didn't initially like the Explorer, but something told me to go back and try them both on again.

The Explorer is growing on me and I find myself thinking about it.

Explorer 2 42mm, GMT 2c TT. I own both, and prefer the look of the explorer 2 42mm for daily wear.

What really struck me is how well it fits on the wrist. Although the shape is very similar, the EXP II feels much more comfortable and it looks less "bulky", kind of "shapier" than the GMT II.

After all this you may ask why I am still in (virtual) love with the GMT II. Well, to me it looks dressier (even being a sporty watch) and somehow more formal.

I love the rotating bezel on the GMT. Furthermore the brushed surface on the Explorer is much more prone to scratches.

Interesting factoid: If a GMT hand is set to local time, it will always point north (in the Northern Hemisphere), when the 12-hour hand is pointed to the sun.

Interesting point, Mike. Then it becomes the lesser of two evils. Scratches on the pcl, or the bezel...

If you are OCD with scratches, I would avoid the brushed bezel (PCL scratches, on the other hand, eventually develop a nice haze/patina). If not, I would go 216570.
