Out of curiosity, does anyone know how much gold is actually in a gold Rolex any way? If you backed out the weight of the movement, how much value are you getting in going from Stainless to Gold on say a Submariner...or any other gold model. Reason I ask is, since you can usually get them for a healthy discount, at what point do you hit intrinsic value. Wouldn't it be pretty neat if you could ever get to the point of parity?

Price paid = value of gold.

Wishful thinking, but would be a pretty neat wearable store of wealth instead of just having gold sitting in a safe.

I do believe this estimate has been calculated here before. Someone took the weight of the gold watch, less the weight of the non-gold components, times the percentage of gold in the alloy.

Let me say the additional cost of the gold in the watch is nowhere near the additional end cost to the consumer. Part of this is the fact that Rolex needs to turn that extra gold into a horological instrument you put on your wrist. But a major part of the difference between gold content and end MSRP is the premium associated with a Solid Gold Rolex. There must be enough people already willing to pay this large premium for Rolex to keep their prices where they are. But, this makes it awesome to think I wear a Gold Rolex!!

This has been covered before..I can't remember just what the outcome was but I do know that the intrinsic value of the gold itself is not that much compared to the price of the watch..you are paying for a combination of things when buying full gold, the gold itself, the brand and the model. Thus, if you melt the gold and get a price value, you will only get small amount of value for it compared to actual price of the complete package

Been discussed before, I think the amount of gold is pretty paltry compared to the sum that you pay. I think it was like under $5000 worth of 24K gold.

When i got to see the inside of my yg dd case with movement out I didn't like how much Rolex carves out of the inside case.

What I did see once was pictures of the case - sans guts - and they cheat you out of solid gold by having cells/pockets of air where it ought to be solid (and is, in the steel ingot ones). Put me off ever buying a gold one. Bloody rip off...

I think the only ones that you could get for Gold value would be WAAAAY OLLLLLD and worn out totally. And then you will still pay some premium over gold value..

There is an old old post with old old gold prices and weight of old old DDs.

Generally speaking a modern all-gold mens Rolex is circa 200g sans crystal/movement.

Roughly 6oz of 18ct = 4.5 of 24ct = $7,500 approx.

That's interesting info. How about the value of gold over steel to price spread between a gold Rolex versus steel Rolex of the same model...in today's value of gold.
