Took The Plunge! New SS DJ w/ DD~
Hi All,
New to the forums and wanted to introduce myself. As of today I'm the proud new owner of a 16234 Datejust w/ diamond dial & jubilee band (first Rolex!). I decided to purchase it as a Christmas present for myself and intend to keep it for a very, very long time. I would have taken pics, but I purchased it at the Lotte Department Store Duty Free Shop in Seoul and won't be able to see it again until Monday when I fly back home. I believe I got a good deal, please let me know if you feel otherwise. Looking at Alan Furman's website I saw that the watch is offered at $6100. I was able to snag it for $5975 out the door and its coming from an AD. Attached is a pick from the Furman website of the same exact watch that I purchased. I did have a couple of questions that I was hoping someone would be able to help answer.... - I was not able to get the watch sized on my wrist, as the rep who handles sizing in unavailable until Monday, the day of my departure. Will I be able to walk into any AD in the U.S. and get it sized? I'm guessing that they'll charge a fee of some sort or would this be covered under the Rolex warranty? - For that matter, what exactly is covered under the Rolex warranty? When speaking with the sales rep I understood her to say that the warranty lasts two years, but with my broken Korean I didn't understand anything that she said beyond that. - I inquired about the hologram, as the watch did not have one. I was told that during this past year, Rolex stopped putting the hologram sticker on their watches. Is this correct? My watch has a "Z" serial number if that helps confirm this. - I'm thinking about purchasing a watch winder...is there anything terribly wrong with the under $50 winders I find on ebay? The watch will be hidden somewhere within my house, so I'm not particularly concerned about the aesthetics of the winder. - Is there a thread that details the proper owner cleaning of a Rolex? I read the FAQ about keeping your watch clean, but was wondering if anyone had additional tips or advice. - I'm a t-shirt and jeans type of guy. I don't spend a lot on clothes and would rather splurge on other things. Would I look ridiculous wearing this watch with my usual garb? Maybe I should start investing in some moderately priced polos.... Sorry for so many questions! I'm excited about my new Rolex, thanks in advance for your help |

Now to your questions: 1) Any decent AD should adjust that bracelet for you for free while you wait. It is not rocket science and can be done in a giffy so should really not cost anything. 2) All "faults in materials and workmanship" are covered, but if you break the crystal or forget to screw in the crown when your swimming it would not be covered since those would be accidents that are not caused by Rolex quality control. 3) Yes, the green caseback sticker is no more issued, and a CLEAR caseback sticker, easily peeled off, is now on the casebacks. 4) Basically, a watch winder for 50 $ would do its job as well as a more expensive example - at least on a short term basis, but often you would not get the settings that are convinient on for more pricy ones, and also cheap winders are known to "break down", i.e. simply stop working. IMHO watch winders are more of a convenience than a necessity. If you would have a very complicated watch like a Patek Philippe or IWC perpetual calendar, a watch winder comes in handy so that you do not have to adjust the whole calendar if the watch has stopped. But for a Rolex where you would only have to adjust the date, I do not believe you need a watch winder. So I would just let it stop and give it a full 40 windings before wearing it again. A long term "rest" of the watch would definately NOT harm the watch! Modern watch lubrication oils are synthetic and would not dry out like the oils used in older watches. When you are wearing your watch, the parts are actually being exposed to WEAR AND TEAR. And if you are keeping the watch constantly moving on a watch winder, this means even MORE wear and tear. Therefore a watch winder has no positive effect on the watch whatsoever, but is a mere practical device to keep it going. 5) The "best" way to wash your Rolex is a simple one: Just wash your Rolex with MILD, liquid handwashing soap and lukewarm water. You can also use a SOFT toothbrush between the links. Afterwards, wipe the watch dry in a soft cotton towel. Done! 6) I can see no problem wearing that DJ with whatever clothes you like to wear.
