Aberlour 18 year single malt Scotch

I picked up a bottle of Aberlour 18 yr old Scotch earlier this afternoon. Cracked it open with a buddy of mine after work, boy was it good!!!

I'm by all means a novice when it comes to Scotch, but this was really good to us. Drank it neat, then with a splash of spring water to see the difference. We both liked it a lil better with the splash.

I'm usually a JW guy, Green being my fav of the group, but this single malt was special. I'd love to know what some of the REAL Scotch drinkers think of this if any have tried it.

Price was $110 for a 750ml bottle, it was nice and smooth, and liked the HINT of sweetness to it.

Had the same experience Sunday night after work Mike, however mine was a combo of Glenlivet 15, Talisker and a blend called Te Bheag, which was quite good for the money!! Needless to say his wife called looking for him lol and I woke up with a bigger head than expected

Andrew, that 12 yr sounds like I would like it...

Tony, your Scotch thread from last year inspired me to go out and buy a new bottle... After reading the suggestions to the "sweeter" Scotch you were also looking for, I decided on the Highland Park 12 or 18 yr that was suggested to you. Ran into my buddy that was at the store and he highly recommended that Aberlour, so I ended up buying that.

Though I'm very happy with the Aberlour, at $110/bottle, it's a lil pricey to drink regularly. I'd like to find something really nice for like 1/2 that. They have a 12 yr for about 1/2 the price of the 18, gonna give that a whirl.

There are all kinds of single malts, from very heavy Highland and Speysides (like Mortlach and Glenmorangie) to very light (e.g., Glenlivit and Glenfiditch) to very smokey/peaty (Laphroaig). My favorite happens to be a 25 year old Macallan Sherry Cask (but at $800 for a 750 ml bottle, it's too pricy for me now). My second favorite is the 10 yr old Laphroaig, just about the peatiest whisky made.

I was just going to say there Mr. God, your Scotch taste certainly had 2 different extremes!! The Laphroig and the Macallan are about as different and opposite as you can get!

And yet both are great, so I agree with him. Figures I agree with the TRF Deity

The Aberlour is a very good whisky. It's not just another sherry bomb. Lots going on in the nose and on the palate. I last had the 18 about a year ago at a tasting, good but not great (at least that's my recollection, I didn't take notes). To be honest, if you liked the 18, you'll probably love the Aberlour A'bunadh. It's outstanding and cask strength. Great whisky. Tremendous. It's made in batches, each is a bit different. It's an outstanding value as well at about $75. I always have a bottle.

Brian, I'm very novice to the Scotch world. I am trying to expand my tastings past the blended JW line. This was my 1st, and to an absolute novice and virgin to the single malts, I was very pleased.
I went out today and grabbed a bottle of Highland Park 12 yr that I saw mentioned on another Scotch thread. At $54 for a bottle, it was not quite half as good as the Ab 18.
Can you recommend a nice tasty (sweet hints) single malt for about $50/btl? My buddy is going to bring over a bottle of Ab 12 yr ($50/btl) to try this weekend.

Yikes...Mike, why does that Scotch bottle look soooo big compared to the other ones??? We're the other ones larger type bottles you get on airplanes???

Sorry couldn't help myself.....I am definitely out of the loop as I stopped drinking over 13 years ago but I did enjoy Scotch and Cognac when I did partake.....

Actually, the JW bottles are 1L and the Aberlour is only a 750ml, the JW bottles are larger... It's just the angle and my iPhone picture.

To all you Scotch fans, I highly recommend visiting Scotland... one breath of the fresh air, a sip of the local water and you'll see why the whisky is so good.

I love single malts. Glenmorangie Original 10 almost always these days.
Love it, love it, love it!!

A couple of nights it's helped me pull the trigger on yet another Sub!!
(1680 currently on the way!).
