What's your watch-buying style?

We all do it differently.

The predator. It seems like most folks here get their sights set on a particular watch, and focus the effort on acquisition of this one elusive timepiece. Once it is acquired, they bask in the afterglow of success for a period of time (a few months, or hours for Bo and JJ) and then move on to the next acquisition.

The impulse buyer. Some folks will be hit all of the sudden by a watch, and purchase it on the spot with little or no reflection. "My wife and I were out shopping for purses, and I stepped into the AD. Sitting right there in the case was a ____. I couldn't resist!!" You never know what watch these folks are going to come home with, or when.

The lurker. (My personal style.) Some of us have a list we're quietly keeping an eye out for. We might casually search the usual websites or sources just in case something turns up. If one happens to pop up at the right price, we snatch it up.


This one was on my short list, and about a week ago it popped up. About two years old, very clean model, one owner purchased from AD, at a great price. So I snatched it!! Thanks Karis!!

And right now Im currently lurking for a TT Black Sub. Once I find the right price and the right time to get it, I snatch it!

2007 flipping and flopping:

Started with an Omega Seamaster (Bond)

Bought a vintage Omega Seamaster

Flipped both for a vintage SS Datejust

Flipped that one to a GMT

Sold it, because I needed some fast cash

Bought a Seiko Black Monster (I had to have something)

Sold the Black Monster

Bought a vintage SS/WG Datejust

Flipped that one for an Omega Speedmaster Broad Arrow

And just before new years, and after years of searching, I managed to hunt down my dream watch, a 5513 from my birth year, which is a keeper, and my dayli wearer.

...so I'm basicly a "one watch"-type of guy. What does that make me: Predator, Impulse buyer, or Lurker?

Guess I'm a "lurker with intent." I'm so much happier when I research a purchase (GREAT research material on this site - thank you). I saved over $1,000 on purchasing a GMT-II - and chose the non-c model because of the lighter weight.

I agree with your categories and this is a great post to reflect upon.

Another thing I agree with is buying "PRE-LOVED ROLEX" or watches in general.

Some (lot's) people take really good care of their watches and keep everything that came with the purchase. I really like to get good deals, so I love "pre-loved."

I have another one too...travel and vacation watch buying... I love get a new watch when I travel. My Explorer I is from Portland, OR and my Oyster Date is from Paris.

this year I'm going to Las Vegas, London UK, Austria and Germany. I wonder what I'll come home with?

Very excited about the new acquisition--thanks for not snatching it out from under me! I wasn't really looking, (just like I'm not really looking for a Zenith EP400 chrono or a Seamaster GMT white) but it was definitely on the list.

And then it just "appeared," saying "Buy me!" Who am I to argue?

Totally agree with this one... when ever we plan a vacation, I'm always have to add on the price of another watch to the vacation budget.

Those are the times I can be an impulse buyer...usually I'm a predator.

The predatory acquisitions are always more satisfying, and more loved.

And surprisingly cost effective...Usually if I have my sights set on a watch, I'll do extra shifts, and work harder with the idea that I need the money to buy the watch...I'll continue in this mindset until I've purchased it.
Usually by that time I've earned enough extra to pay for it three times over, but t'is the way my crooked mind works...

Thanks Arby! The watch actually belonged to my mom who recently bought a new style DJ. I helped her sell it! It was lovely though! Nothing like a white roman dial

Predator BUT also impulse with a twist.
I am always looking at watches. Occassionally one will catch my eye, then I do the research on it. Don't buy on the spot, but will go home, check the forums, talk to some buddies, then go back & get it.

I'm usually not in the market for something new. But then all of a sudden I sight something that I've got to have. So I set about researching that particular watch and when the right one (price, age, etc) presents itself, I snap my jaws around it and gulp it down.
